“Ms. Reid, you’re back!”

People on the street greeted Hayley’s group warmly.

They looked clean and healthy. Their clothes were neat, their faces full of color, their bodies strong and well fed.

“Got new residents with you?” someone asked.

“Yeah,” Hayley said, “but they’re joining Base Ki.”

She gave Liam a small look, passing the group over to him.

She had already made it clear earlier that she didn’t want them.

Her own base wasn’t short on people, anymore. Every position already had someone filling it.

Anyone who wanted to join Haylight Base now had to stand out.

At the very least, they needed strong survival instincts, good character, or real ability.

Like the students and teachers she had rescued from the zombie-infested high school earlier. Those kinds of people she was willing to bring in herself.

Among this group, the only one who really stood out was Jasmine, a water-element Gifted.

If Jasmine had actually stepped forward and asked to join, Hayley might have considered it.

But Jasmine’s quiet personality was too passive.

If anyone wanted to join her base, they could ask; she wasn’t going to chase after them.

So Hayley handed the group to Liam, who immediately passed them to Derek.

“Take them to registration,” Liam said. “Add them to Base K1.”

“Got it, boss!”

Derek led Jasmine and the others toward the residential district of Base K1.

Along the way, he started explaining how things worked.

“We use a point system here,” he said. “Once you register, we’ll submit your info to the base butler, Hayz. Most people get their personal accounts set up by the next day.”

At Hayley’s base, accounts were created instantly. After all, Hayz belonged to her. Other bases had to wait a little longer.

“What do the points do?” someone asked.

“Points are basically money,” Derek said. “You can buy anything with them.”

He pointed ahead as they walked.

“That building over there is the points supermarket. Once you’ve got points, you can buy whatever you need there.

“Are points hard to earn?”

“Not really,” Derek replied. “Just do your job well. The average salary in our base is about 100 points a month. At the supermarket, rice costs about 1 point per pound. Pork runs around 15 points per pound. If you work hard, it’s easy to earn points, and they go a long way.

“Since you’re joining Base K1, you’ll also get our base benefits,” he added. “During holidays, we give residents extra supplies. And while you’re getting started without points, your workplace will provide three meals a day, long as you work hard.”

Donnie, Charlie, and the others stared at him in disbelief. This sounded too good to be real!

After a long pause, Donnie finally spoke. “How is your base this good?”
