“What did they give out?”

Derek grinned.

“Last year, during Hearthfall, our base gave everyone two Hearthfall cakes and a big barbecue dinner. But over at Haylight Base? They handed out pork, Hearthfall cakes, brand-new clothes, and little gold nuggets.

“And during the New Year, our base gave out rice and pork. Haylight Base gave out winter coats, hot water bottles, a huge holiday dinner with chicken, duck, fish, and more, plus cash gifts.

“The smallest cash gift had 100 points. The biggest prize was 1,000 points and an electric scooter.”

Everyone stopped walking, and their eyes went wide.

Donnie and Charlie stared at Derek as if they’d just heard something unbelievable.

Holy hell. That much stuff? What kind of place was that? How could they be so generous?

“Wait… Where is Haylight Base?” someone asked.

Derek straightened up with obvious pride.

“That’s the base my boss runs,” he said. “The womarf you just saw. The prettiest and most badass one. Hayley. She’s the director of Haylight Base, and she’s also the leader of the Haylight League. She’s the most powerful person around here.”

Everyone froze.

Their eyes widened even more.

Damn.

It was her!

Suddenly, they remembered the conversation earlier, back when Warren had begged her to take them with her.

She had demanded all their supplies, including every potato they had.

At the time, they thought she was being greedy.

But she had said that once they reached her base, they would realize those potatoes had been a bargain.

Now, it finally made sense.

She hadn’t cared about those potatoes at all. It had just been a symbolic entry fee.

She really was that powerful.

“You had your chance when you first met her. If you had made a good impression then, maybe she would’ve taken you. Now? You can forget about it.”

Truth was, he’d had a chance once, but he hadn’t taken it.

Not that he’d ever betray Liam.
