Chapter 687
Meanwhile, Hayley pulled open the wardrobe.
The moment it swung wide, an invisible air barrier flared up in front of her.
But beyond the stale, rotting smell, there was only a narrow passage, barely wide enough for one person
A hidden tunnel.
“It’s inside,” Winona said from behind her.
Hayley sent her mental energy down the passage, but she sensed nothing.
“You three stay out here,” she said. “If something bites you, I’m not fixing it.”
Then she stepped inside.
“I’m not scared,” Griffin said, following right after her.
“Me neither,” Winona added, hurrying in behind him.
Scott didn’t say anything. He just came along.
Hayley led the way, her air barrier fully up. She held a flashlight in her hand, cutting through the darkness.
The tunnel sloped downward.
Solid brick walls pressed in on both sides, and beneath her feet, old wooden steps creaked loudly with every step she took The steps beneath Hayley suddenly leveled out, and the sound around her opened up into a wide, echoing space.
Hayley paused, taking in what was in front of her.
It looked like a lab.
A white operating bed sat in the center. On either side, rows of equipment stood silently, their screens long dead. Against the wall were two clean white storage cabinets. A matching white table held an open lockbox.
Inside it was a sealed vial filled with a clear, unknown liquid.
Hayley’s eyes caught the label. It was a string of foreign text, and beneath it was a date.
August 9, 2031.
Her mind snapped to it instantly,
The day the outbreak began!

Then a scream tore through the space.
“Aaah!”
It sounded like a zombie, but not quite.
There was fear and panic in it.
It was human.
A violent wave of mental force erupted across the entire room.
Scott, Griffin, and Winona all staggered as if they had been hit in the head with a hammer.
Their nerves screamed. It felt like thousands of needles stabbing into their brains all at once.
Their vision went black, and even breathing became impossible.
Trying to speak was worse; their minds wouldn’t obey.
Winona dropped to the ground, clutching her head in pain.
Griffin had always had a strange sensitivity to this kind of thing. It hit him even harder.
Scott was already a level-five Gifted, his mental strength far above most. Even then, it didn’t matter. The mental storm from the level-six zombie crushed him all the same.
And then, a clear voice cut through it.
“That’s all you’ve got?”
Hayley sheathed her blade.
