Chapter 710

The others didn’t like Hayley’s attitude at all.

“Where are you even from? Sneaking into our camp like this?”

Out here, people stuck together, and they didn’t trust outsiders. Once a group formed, anyone new was treated like a threat.

Back in their own camp, it wasn’t as obvious. Kieran kept things under control, so no one pushed too far.

But now, they were somewhere unfamiliar, somewhere dangerous. Instinct kicked in fast. The people from the same camp closed ranks and turned on anyone who didn’t belong.

Aside from Tyler, who sat quietly on his bed, the rest all looked at Hayley and Winona with open hostility.

Hayley didn’t bother explaining anything. She wasn’t here to make friends; she was here to find out if this inner camp was tied to Ascendant Creed.

She pointed up at the ceiling. “Go ahead. Talk louder. Better yet, come at me. Let them get a clear view.”

Everyone followed her gesture and noticed the cameras. Just like that, the room went quiet.

Hayley had placed Winona on the top bunk on the left. As she moved to take the lower one, a man stepped in front of her.

“I already took this spot.”

He pushed past her and dropped onto the bed as if he owned it.

The others followed his lead, grabbing the lower bunks until all five were taken.

Hayley watched them, unimpressed.

What a bunch of childish idiots.

In a place like this, the lower bunks weren’t safer. They had more foot traffic and were closer to the door. They were the first to get hit if anything happened.

Let them have it.

She climbed to the top bunk beside Winona.

Below, the chatter picked up again.

Most of it centered around Jocelyn, the only mental-variant Gifted among them, and a girl at that.

“Jocelyn’s pretty strong, right? We don’t even have that many with mental-variant gifts back at camp.

“No, she’s the only one.”

“That’s impressive.”

Tve heard those are powerful Jocelyn, you’ve got to look out for us.”

“Yeah, this place feels dangerous. We’re counting on you.”

They pilled on the praise

Jocelyn didn’t respond to any of it. With no curtain or privacy, she just pulled the blanket over her head and turned to face the wall.

Hayley leaned back beside Winona

A quiet voice came from below.

Tm Tyler. If you two need anything, just let me know.”

He spoke softly from the bunk beneath Hayley’s.

Hayley glanced down and met his eyes. She gave a lazy smile, then lay back without saying a word.
