Hayley, who had been on guard the whole time, snapped awake the moment the door opened.
From the top bunk, she saw a strip of light spill in from outside.
Eight people in white uniforms stepped in, masks and caps covering their faces. They pushed a medical
cart with them
Once inside, they scanned the room, One man in a white coat moved down the line, checking each person one by one.
When he reached Hayley, she closed her eyes and kept her breathing steady. He was tall enough to easily see the upper bunks, his gaze sharp as it lingered on each person’s face.
Hayley could feel him stop beside her bed. That cold, measuring look settled on her.

Her breathing didn’t change. Her muscles stayed loose, completely at ease.
After a moment, he moved on.
Even as he left, her breathing stayed exactly the same.
The dosage is fine,” he said.
Inspection complete.
That was where Hayley differed from the others. Her control was absolute.
Most people couldn’t fake sleep under pressure like that. Tension always gave them away. Hayley, however, didn’t carry fear in her body. Not in a way anyone could read.
She stayed relaxed and natural, but if something went wrong, she could react instantly. That kind of
control had been carved into her over time.
In this world, fear would get you killed.
Once they passed her by, Hayley lay still, listening.
Voices drifted up from below.
How many more does Lab Five need?”
“One
“Then take this one.”

They made their decision just like that.
Hands reached for the lower bunk near the door.
Eric.
They lifted him onto the cart, then moved out as quickly as they had come. The door shut, and the sound of wheels rolled away down the hallway.
“Hayley…”
A tiny voice, barely more than a whisper, came from the next bunk. Winona reached out, fingers brushing against her.
Hayley shook her head slightly, signaling the girl not to speak. There were still cameras.
Winona understood. She turned toward the wall, pretending to sleep again.
Hayley pulled the blanket over her head and checked the time.
It was 10:08 p.m.
She stayed alert, drifting in and out of light sleep.
Sometime deep into the night, the door opened again.
The same cart. The same people.
They brought Eric back. They laid him down on the lower bunk, then left just as quickly.
The door shut again.
Hayley checked the time.
It was now 2:30 a.m.
They had taken him for over four hours and brought him back.
What were they doing?
