Hayley knew really whoever was behind the inner camp was beyond anything she had imagined.

Only someone with serious power could build something this large, this complex, and fully equipped, deep inside a canyon.

And yet, they had abandoned it without hesitation.

Which meant this wasn’t their main base. Somewhere out there, they had something bigger, better, and stronger.

This had just been one of their nests.

Someone with that kind of reach was anything but ordinary.

But there was something else.

Winona’s mother had said that everything they told people was a lie.

What did that mean? Did she mean the whole “recruiting workers” story was a lie? Or something more?

Hayley couldn’t piece it together yet.

The trail on Ascendant Creed had gone cold. The Sovereign Academy had vanished, too. She had nowhere to start looking for either of them.

The only thing she could do for now was take over this place.

With the inner camp cleared out, they could move in and use what was left behind.

Not bad, picking up a ready-made base.

When they came back out, the people in the outer camp were in complete panic. Without the inner camp, they looked lost, as if they didn’t know what to do with themselves.

Hayley told them they could stay if they wanted. From now on, her people would take over the inner

camp.

They could trade and keep things running however they liked. If anyone wanted to leave with them and join Haylight League, they were free to come.

“Wait! Hold on!” Kieran called out as she was about to leave. “What about the people inside?”

“You mean the ones who went in to work?”

“Yeah!”

“I told you. They were test subjects. They kept bringing in new batches. The ones before them are probably all gone.”

That was what Winona’s mother had told her.

Everyone had been turned into lab rats. No one would get out.

Kieran’s face went pale. He turned and walked toward the inner camp like he had lost his soul

Hayley didn’t stop him.

A lot of people chose to leave with her, wanting to see what life was like outside in the leagues.

But Kieran, and others who still had family inside, stayed.

Some rushed into the inner camp. Some collapsed outside it, crying uncontrollably. Others just wandered along the edges, dazed. No one knew what they were thinking.

When Hayley saw all that, something tightened faintly in her chest.

She had seen piles of bodies, seen how brutal the apocalypse could be.

Yet she still couldn’t stand the sight of people clinging to that last sliver of hope, even when it was already gone.

They were still waiting for their people to come back.

Damn the Sovereign Academy!

Hayley led her group back to Haylight League. She handed everything over to Liam to handle, then went straight to find Ruby.

“Aunt Ruby, have you heard of the Sovereign Academy?” Hayley asked the moment she stepped into the

lab.
