Alex snapped his head toward her.

He glanced at the people inside, then grabbed her arm. “Give us a minute. We need to talk.”

He pulled her out into the hallway.

“We can’t agree to this.” His voice was low and serious.

“This place isn’t normal. At first, I thought it was just a small survivor group. I was wrong. They’re much

more powerful than I thought.

“Did you notice the island? It’s all training grounds. There’s not a single patch of farmland, but they’re supporting over 3,000 people. That means everything they eat is shipped in. And that means they have territory somewhere else.”

Alex’s expression tightened.

“This Sovereign Academy… It doesn’t sit right with me. I’d never even heard of them before the outbreak, and now they’ve got something that big going in a world like this? That’s not normal.

“They can dress it up however they want, but this is the apocalypse. There’s no telling what they’re really after. We can’t get mixed up in that.

“Let’s forget the oil field. We’ll find another one.”

Hayley looked at him, then reached out and clapped him on the shoulder.

“Alex,” she said, almost amused, “you’re still the same. Too careful.”

Alex went quiet.

Too careful.

Was she calling him a coward?

“Hayley…”

“Go back and take that oil field,” Hayley said, flicking his forehead. “What are you scared of? Every time something happens, you want to back off. That’s a coward’s move.

“This Sovereign Academy is already right at your doorstep, and you’re still hesitating? Grow a spine.”

Alex opened his mouth, then shut it again.

“You said it yourself, this is the apocalypse. There are no rules, no limits. If we had never crossed paths, fine. But now we have. There’s no backing out.

“Why do you think turning them down means they’ll just let us go? They want people. We are people. Our
