The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 746

Chapter 745

Just as Jocelyn started to sit down, a knife slid in with a sharp clang right under her.

She jolted upright, heart jumping, and found herself staring straight into Hayley’s eyes.

“When did I ever say you could join us?” Hayley asked, her tone light, almost lazy.

“I-It’s me, Jocelyn!” she blurted.

Hayley didn’t even blink. “And who’s that?”

Jocelyn’s face darkened instantly. She whipped her head toward the others.

“Garrick! Barnaby! Say something! We used to share a dorm. You were the ones trying to get on my go side back then, saying you’d look out for me!”

The two men she called out to looked at her like she had just said something ridiculous.

They’d had a bit of goodwill toward her before. Her brother had died, and she was a mental-variant Gifted, plus she was a girl. It made them think maybe it was worth getting closer.

But she had never given them anything, so what gave her the right to demand anything now? At most, they just knew each other. Was she out of her mind?

Thinking back, all they felt now was regret. They had tried to cozy up to Jocelyn and ended up overlooking Hayley.

They had been completely blind.

“Well? Say something!” Jocelyn snapped.

“Jocelyn,” Garrick said, keeping his voice steady, “we invited you to join Ms. Reid before. You said no

“Yeah,” Barnaby added, “we asked you more than once. If you regret it now, that’s not on us. We did what we could.”

Jocelyn’s face flushed, then went pale.

She regretted it

She regretted it more than anything

If she had known that sticking with Hayley meant safety and actual food, she wouldn’t have gone to Preston instead She let him take advantage of her, on top of that

But what did they expect her to do now?

Grovel and beg?

Not happening

Chapter 745

“You people are heartless! You’ve got no loyalty, no shame!” 2

Jocelyn shot back, then turned and glared at Hayley,

“Especially you! Don’t forget, you killed my brother. You owe me, I’m already being generous by forg you and joining you. What more do you want?”

Hayley listened, then slowly stood up.

A quiet sigh left her lips.

In this already irritating life of hers, there were always people like this crashing into her path. And somehow, each one was worse than the last, more ridiculous and more deserving of a slap

Smack!

Her hand came down hard, sending Jocelyn spinning sideways.

“What do I want?” Hayley stepped forward and slapped her again.

“I want to hit you, that’s what. What’s wrong with your head? I’ve seen stupid people, but I’ve never se someone as dumb as you. If you’ve got trouble understanding English, go back to school and learn yo alphabets. Maybe then you’ll hear how stupid you sound.

“You’re saying I killed your brother? Everyone else in that dorm didn’t turn into zombies, but he did, and somehow that’s my fault? What, do my hands carry a virus now? I slapped him and turned him into a zombie? If that’s the case, go ahead and wait. I’m hitting you with the same hand. You’ll be joining him

no time.

“And how exactly do these people owe you anything? What have you ever given them? Why should they speak up for you? They asked you again and again to join them. You said no. Now you see them doing well, and suddenly you’re jealous and bitter, acting as if they owe you their whole lives, and you don! even have to give anything or take any risks.

“Stop acting like the whole world owes you something!”

Smack! Smack! Smack!

Hayley landed several more hits, the last one sending Jocelyn stumbling all the way back onto her own group

When Jocelyn hit the ground, her head was spinning She sat there, dazed, clutching her burning check

That was when she caught the smell of blood

“Over there!” someone in her group shouted in panic
