Chapter 753
Hayley was too infuriating. Celia couldn’t stand her.
“Yeah, I’m talking about you!” Celia stood up and faced Hayley. “If you really have eight gifts, I’ll eat dirt!”
Griffin let out a laugh. “Captain Gorgeous, you hear what she just said?”
Hayley glanced at Celia. “As if I’d let her freeload off me.”
Celia froze, her confidence cracking.
“What the hell do you mean?” she snapped, air hissing through the gap in her front teeth.
Douglas’s tone dropped. “Celia. Sit down.”
“Boss! She just insulted me! She called me a freeloader!”
“Enough. Sit down. If you can’t follow orders, you’re out of the team,” Douglas said, sharp and final.
Celia’s face went stiff with anger. She stomped off and dropped into a corner, fuming.
“So, you believe her?” Preston asked Douglas after she left.
“Not really,” Douglas replied, pulling his gaze back. “I don’t see how anyone could have that many gifts. But right now, the goal is to survive and pass the trial. It’d be best if we could work together.”
“You’re right.” Preston nodded.
Douglas still wanted to pull Hayley into their side, but her group didn’t give them anything to work with.
So they stayed where they were, crammed together through the rest of the day.
By nightfall, it was the second night.
They went on chewing their soaked cakes, getting through the night the hard way. If they could make it through tonight and last until tomorrow, they would pass the trial.
Thunder rolled outside. The rain kept pouring.
Somervale was swallowed in darkness, a city drowned in zombies.
There wasn’t a single light anywhere.
Everyone still alive moved like rats, wishing they could burrow underground and hide from the hordes.
But this was Somervale. There was no safe corner. Hospitals, schools, shopping centers, subway tunnels, parks, even public restrooms… There were zombies everywhere
Gunfire echoed more frequently that night.
Hayley stayed by the couch, half-resting, listening to every sound around her.

Through the storm, the gunshots kept coming.
Every shot meant someone was fighting for their life.
More people died that night.
Three thousand had been dropped into the city.
By the third day, fewer than 100 were still alive. About 30 of them were here, with Hayley.
When morning came, the rain finally stopped.
Hayley looked at the clearing sky and checked the time. “We’re moving.”
“Alright, boss.”
“Got it.”
Tyler and the others quickly packed up. The people guarding the door stood as well.
Seeing them move, Douglas spoke up.
“Let’s go, too.”
“Yeah,” Preston said quietly, his eyes on Hayley. “We follow her. Let her lead.”
Douglas turned and met his gaze.
A flicker of hesitation crossed his face. It would be a waste for someone like her to die, but survival
came first.
