Chapter 759

Like a raging river in flood, the zombie horde poured in from every direction. Wherever there was food they swirled together, surging and churning, swallowing every living thing in seconds before rolling forward again, all of it converging on the financial center.

There were too many of them.

Hayley locked the main doors, then told Griffin to take the others and start heading upstairs, opening every door along the way.

She lingered a second longer, watching the glass entrance tremble under the pressure. Outside, a sea of zombies packed tight, sprinting toward the stairwell.

She slipped into the emergency stairwell and locked the door behind her.

Gripping the railing, she took the steps two at a time, moving fast.

Eighty floors.

Over 1,300 feet straight up.

Most people would need at least half an hour just to climb it, and the higher you went, the worse the burn

got.

And this was all stairs.

Hayley kept a steady rhythm, skipping steps as she went.

This building wasn’t like the 27-story one she had dealt with before. Almost every floor here had zombies.

Griffin had cleared a path for her. The ones on each level had been locked inside office units behind security doors.

Any stragglers had already been taken out.

By the time she hit the 30th floor, she caught up with Griffin and the others.

Tyler and the rest were gasping for air, forcing themselves up the stairs while fending off the occasional zombie that came out of nowhere.

“Raaah!”

A zombie in an expensive suit dropped from above

Its body was oddly intact, except for a torn gash on its arm. The pale lifeless face of what used to be a white-collar worker stared straight at them as it opened its mouth

The stench of rot hit with a swarm of flies

It lunged.

Tyler and the others froze for a split second, completely spent.

Then a blade shot through the air and buried itself right in the zombie’s skull.

“Stay on me. Keep moving.”

Hayley came up from below. Her face was flushed, but she didn’t look tired at all.

The moment they saw her, everyone snapped back to life, pushing themselves to keep climbing.

Forty floors.

Fifty.

Sixty.

After that, every extra floor felt twice as hard. Their legs were burning and heaving, as if they were filled

with lead.

Pain stacked on pain. Exhaustion hit in waves.

But no one stopped.

Seventy.

Eighty.

The hatch above them swung open.

A blast of cold air rushed in from above.

Everyone, drenched in sweat, felt the chill hit their skin, instantly cooling them down. They all felt a sense of relief they had never experienced before.

They made it.

They actually made it!

Hayley was the first to reach the rooftop.

They were lucky.

There were no zombies up here.

The others followed close behind, slamming the door shut and barricading it with whatever they could find

Hayley stepped to the edge of the building and looked down.

Below, it was nothing but zombies. A dense, writhing mass surrounded the tower, slamming against it from all sides. Some of them were even climbing the exterior, clinging to the walls and hauling themselves upward.

Luckily, it had rained for the past couple of days, so the glass was slick.

Most of them barely made it five floors before slipping and crashing back down.
