Chapter 760
Hayley stood on the rooftop. It didn’t take long before the steady thump of a helicopter cut through the air and came straight for them.
Just as the zombies smashed through the stairwell fire door and spilled inside, they were already climbing into the helicopter.
Exactly like she had predicted.
They had picked the right spot. That was the only reason the rescue team reached them so quickly
They were the first ones taken out. The helicopter lifted and headed toward other parts of Somervale
From above, Hayley watched it all unfold.
Some people had managed to hide inside a massive bronze statue, packed tight with zombies outside But they couldn’t get out on their own, and the helicopter couldn’t reach them. In the end, they were
abandoned.
They had gone three days with no food or water, were soaked through the rain, and were barely hanging
on inside that statue… And after all that, they were still marked as eliminated.
Others weren’t any luckier.
Some tried to rush out the moment rescue arrived, but their position was too exposed. The second they moved, zombies swarmed them. Anyone grabbed or bitten was immediately written off. The helicopter didn’t even try to save them.
Hayley waited.
Only near the very end of the rescue did she see the second person who made it through.
A man covered in blood.
It looked like he had been soaked in it. His clothes had even turned a dark brown. When they pulled him out, he had been standing on top of a monument in a plaza, with bodies piled all around the base
He held a heavy machete that he must’ve scavenged.
By the time he climbed into the helicopter, his gifts were completely drained. He didn’t have an ounce of strength left.
His face was pale, his lips cracked, his skin smeared with blood so thick that you couldn’t make out his features. Still, his build was balanced, and from the shape of his bones he probably wasn’t bad-looking.
He dragged himself inside, his hand shaking uncontrollably as he gripped the blade. Even then, he never let it go.
There were bottles of water in the helicopter

Everyone grabbed one and started drinking.
The man looked like he was dying of thirst.
He snatched a bottle, sat on the floor with his knife still in hand, and tried to twist the cap open. His fingers trembled so badly that he could barely grip it.
“Captain Gorgeous, that guy’s going to break,” Griffin said lazily, leaning back in his seat and tilting his head toward Hayley.
Hayley saw it, too.
On his third try, when his fingers had gone so stiff that he couldn’t even feel the ridges on the cap anymore, a bottle of water rolled to his side, already loosened.
The man froze, then slowly looked up.
Through blood-clumped lashes, he saw someone glowing faintly in the light.
“Captain Gorgeous…”
“Quiet. I’m getting some sleep. Wake me when we land.”
Griffin glanced at Hayley as she closed her eyes, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “Okay.”
