Chapter 795
So this was it.
This had to be the Sovereign Research Institute’s latest batch of results.
Hayley didn’t expect a bonus like this on the side.
She might as well take it.
Hayley grabbed the cart and swept everything into her inventory in one motion.
Right then, a voice came from behind her.
“You’ve got guts, stealing right off someone’s doorstep.”
Hayley and Griffin both looked up at the same time.
Aman in a tailored suit stood in the restroom doorway, one hand in his pocket, watching them like he had been there all along.
“Scott,” Hayley bit out, sharp and cold.
Scott nudged his gold-rimmed glasses up and smiled lightly. “Captain Reid. Been a while.”
“Yeah? Wish it had been longer!” Hayley lunged forward, fist already flying toward his face.
Scott didn’t move. He just watched her calmly. “The second I raise my voice, people will rush in, and your mission will end here.
Her fist stopped three inches from his face.
Scott’s smile didn’t waver; he was confident, almost smug.
Hayley stared at him, jaw tight, then slowly lowered her hand. Just as his brow lifted in faint surprise, she drove her fist straight
into his stomach.
A sharp breath tore out of him. Pain rippled through his body, his muscles seizing.
From outside, someone called, “Boss? Is everything okay?”
Hayley’s hand shot up and clamped around Scott’s throat.
Scott met her eyes, staring straight into the killing intent there. Then he forced out, “I’m fine.”
The hallway went quiet again.
Scott let her get away with that one.
Hayley didn’t return the favor. Her fist came up again and slammed into him.
Scott caught her wrist this time. “You swing again, I swing back.”
“Go ahead,” she snapped
“Hayley, this isn’t you. Have you lost your mind?”
“Yeah, I have,” she shot back, eyes blazing. “You took my aunt, didn’t you?”
Scott blinked, those bright eyes suddenly earnest. “That wasn’t me. You’ve got it wrong.”
Hayley didn’t even blink. She held his gaze like she could tear the truth out of him.
“I don’t believe you.”

For a split second, silence hung between them.
Then Scott laughed under his breath, the sincerity gone in an instant. “Alright. Yeah. That was me.”
Hayley’s expression twisted. “Goto hell!”
“Hayley,” Scott shot back, eyes hard now, “you started it. You came after me first. I just returned the favor.”
“Give me a break!” she snapped. “You went after Griffin, too. Don’t act like you didn’t set this whole thing up first. If you hadn’t played us, I wouldn’t have hit back!”
“And what about you?” Scott fired back. “You said you’d help me, but then you backed out. Don’t think I didn’t notice you were brushing me off.”
That did it.
Hayley grabbed his collar and dragged him forward, her eyes burning red with firy. “Yeah, I regret helping you more than anything I’ve ever done. I should’ve left you to die in that zombie swarm back in Crestford!”
Her fist slammed into his stomach again.
Scott’s face drained of color. His teeth clenched hard as he swallowed the pain without making a sound.
Right then, footsteps echoed outside.
