The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 814

Chapter 814

Ding!

The elevator doors slid open. A sharp wave of disinfectant hit first, followed by the stench of rotting corpses.

Hayley’s Ghost Mode was fading fast. She slipped inside in one swift step.

Then she saw rows upon rows of iron cages stretched out in front of her.

Hayley stared in stunned shock at the zombies confined inside them.

They weren’t just contained, but strapped down to metal examination tables, tubes running into them from every direction. Machines beside them hummed steadily, something like dialysis units, pulling thick, black blood from their bodies.

It looked just like what she had seen back at the Sovereign Academy, when Eric had turned.

But this was different. That blood wasn’t going back in. It was being drained out, furineled into long, clear tubes.

The same tubes she had seen being transported upstairs.

Right then, a sharp beep echoed from one of the cage rooms.

Hayley turned toward the sound.

Inside, a zombie lay completely drained, shriveled like a dried corpse. Its graywhite eyes were wide open, staring blankly at the ceiling, unmoving.

A group of labcoated researchers rushed in and gathered around it. A machine powered up with a soft hum.

With a sharp beep, the zombie’s skull split open like a macadamia nut, a clean seam cracking across it. A mechanical arm reached in and carefully removed the crystal core inside, dull and chalky, completely drained of any shine.

The labcoated researcher glanced at the crystal core, then casually tossed it into the medical waste bin. With a flick of his hand, he signaled the others.

The staff moved quickly, dragging the blooddrained zombie down from the platform. Like it was nothing more than trash, they dumped it onto a cart behind them.

The shriveled body was wheeled away without a second thought.

Then they brought in another subject.

A living person.

Hayley’s breath caught when she saw him. Even unconscious and pale, there was no mistaking it. He was alive.

Once he was secured to the examination table, the lead researcher opened a medical case.

From inside, he took out a vial Hayley instantly recognized. It was the same serum she had seen at the Sovereign Research Institute, the one Scott had personally gone to retrieve.

The serum was injected straight into the man’s body.

His eyes snapped open. A violent tremor ripped through him as he convulsed against the restraints, right in front of everyone. His body twisted and warped as the mutation took hold, until his pupils faded completely into a lifeless graywhite.

Raarh!

A brandnew zombie.

The lab coats watched with clear satisfaction. As soon as the injection was complete, they activated the machines again.

begiuming to draw blood from the zombie’s body while it howled in agony.

Hayley’s pupils shrank.

What were they doing?

Turning living people into zombies just to study antibodies?

No

That wasn’t how antibodies were extracted.

They weren’t observing reactions. They were taking a living person, injecting them, forcing the mutation, and then immediately draining their blood.
