Chapter 830
Hayley stepped off the helicopter.
Everyone below went still.
“Damn… She’s gorgeous.”
“Yeah, she’s even prettier than Mrs. Kinsman!”
“In a world like this, can someone still look like that?”
“She looks like some kind of goddess.”
People stared, eyes wide.
In the apocalypse, a pretty face was hard to come by.
Back in the early days, being beautiful was a liability for most women. But by the mid to late stages, it became a symbol of power
and status.
Everyone knew how hard it was just to get enough to eat, so anyone who could stay clean and look that good had serious backing.
Hayley stepped off the helicopter in one clean motion, like something descending from the sky, completely out of place with everything around her.
No one there could compare.
Clark’s eyes lit up the moment he saw her. He strode forward, voice firm and steady. “You’re Ms. Reid?”
“That’s me.”
Hayley looked him over as he approached. His cotton jacket was worn, patched in places.
He looked to be in his early thirties, with plain looks but a stern, distant expression, and his eyes were sharp and bright. There were thick calluses at the base of his thumb, the kind you only got from years of training.
He carried himself like Liam, with that same military edge.
“You’re Clark Kinsman, the base director?”
“That’s right.” Clark nodded quickly, his eyes shining even more. “Welcome.”
“Thanks. Did Liam tell you why I’m here?”
“He did. First thing tomorrow morning, I’ll send a team of our best to assist you. They’ll follow your lead.”
“Appreciate it.” Hayley gave him a faint smile and extended her hand.
Clark hesitated when he saw it. He lifted his hand, just about to take hers, when a woman cleared her throat nearby.
He froze, then quickly pulled his hand back and gave her a formal salute instead.
Hayley followed the sound.
Behind him stood a woman in a fairly new down jacket. She looked to be in her early thirties, striking but worn down. Her skin and complexion weren’t great, but compared to everyone else here, she still stood out.
Her eyes landed on Hayley, sharp and a little cold.
Clark hurried to introduce her. “This is my wife, Whitney.”
“Nice to meet you,” Hayley said with a nod

Whitney Kinsman gave a faint nod back, expression flat.
Clark frowned slightly. “Whitney, she’s our guest.”
Whitney shot him a glare right in front of Hayley. “What, you want me to bow to her?
Clark didn’t get angry. He just smiled awkwardly at Hayley. “She’s not great with words. Don’t mind her.”
