Chapter 831
“Right, right. Let’s head in. Can’t keep talking out here.” Clark snapped back to it and led the way.
Hayley followed behind him.
Ben’s hand hung there awkwardly. The second she passed, his expression darkened. With everyone watching, he swallowed it.
Clark brought Hayley to the center of the base. He cleared out an office building for her to stay in and had a full table of food prepared.
Hayley ate a few bites, then started talking with him. By the end of the meal, she had a general understanding of the place.
Just like she had guessed, Clark had been in the military before the apocalypse.
Clark wasn’t stationed here. After the outbreak, he fought his way back from the distant Western Division, crossing miles just to find his wife.
After rescuing her, he stayed and built a survivor base from scratch. With his strength, leadership skills, and the natural authority he carried as a former soldier, he became the base director without much resistance.
Step by step, he built the place into what it was now.
Hayley listened, thinking to herself.
This guy was ruthless when it counted.
Everything in the base was well managed under him. He was decisive, capable, and smart, with no real flaws to speak of.
Except for one: his wife, Whitney. And by extension, her brother, Ben.
He spoiled them both.
Hayley could tell just by what they were wearing.
Clark himself wore patched-up old clothes, while Whitney had decent outfits. Ben dressed even better.
Still, that was his business.
If he wanted to do that, it wasn’t her place to say anything.
She only needed to understand the base.
Clark Base had over 8,000 people, and they were barely managing to keep everyone from starving.
At the start, under Clark’s lead, they had managed to seize a food warehouse.
As zombie waves evolved and food supplies expired, getting anything from outside had become harder and harder.
Clark hoped Hayley could provide some food support.
After hearing everything, Hayley nodded.
“I’ll have some sent here when I get back.”
She had supplies on her right now, but she wasn’t about to reveal that. Pulling them out directly would be like

painting a target on her back.
Clark seemed upright and friendly now, but there was no telling how he would react if he found out she had an inventory.
People couldn’t be tested like that.
Hayley figured it was better to have Liam arrange an airdrop later. It was a bit more trouble, but safer.
Clark’s eyes lit up even more when he heard her agree so easily. He raised his glass and, for once, poured himself full cup of liquor.
“Thank you, Ms. Reid. I’ll drink to that!”
Whitney’s expression snapped the moment she saw him down it in one go. “What are you doing? Didn’t you promise me you wouldn’t drink?”
“Come on, I’m celebrating. Let me have a couple of drinks.”
“Celebrating means you get to drink? Why don’t you go eat dirt, too?”
Clark kept smiling, trying to smooth things over. “We have a guest. At least let me keep some dignity.”
