A huge wave of zombies outside suddenly shifted direction, all of them turning toward a new target.

Right then, Hayley dropped her air shield for a split second. A flash of silver cut through the air. One clean swing split open two zombie skulls.

Two high-grade crystal cores dropped into her hand.

One Level 5 mental-variant, one Level 5 speed-enhanced.

She didn’t even glance at them. The moment they touched her palm, the air shield snapped back into place.

Just then, a roaring burst of fire tore open a path straight ahead.

Using the explosions outside to draw off part of the horde and thin the density, Hayley forced her way out of the underground parking garage.

Just as she was about to reach the exit, her eyes flicked back to the scattered cars still sitting in the lot behind her.

Right before she burst out, she raised a hand and hurled a massive fireball into the garage.

Boom!

A deafening explosion ripped through the space.

Every car in the underground garage detonated at once.

With flames blasting upward and the shockwave chasing her, Hayley sprinted for the exit at full speed. The zombies that had been drawn by the earlier explosions outside now turned again, pulled by the even louder blast behind her, flooding back toward the garage.

Hayley tightened her grip on Griffin and ran faster.

Run.

Faster!

“Raarh, raarh, raarh!”

“Raarh!”

Behind her stretched an endless, black mass of zombies. They were on the roads, the railing, at the bus terminal plaza, the train station…

“Griffin! Close the door!”

Hayley shoved Griffin forward toward the main entrance.

He landed steady on his feet and grabbed the large glass doors with both hands, forcing them shut.

The moment he pulled them closed, Hayley slipped inside right behind him, barely clearing the gap.

Bang!

The glass doors slammed shut.

Griffin snapped the top and bottom locks into place.

Right then…

Bang, bang, bang!

Bang, bang!

The entire entrance filled instantly with tightly packed zombies, crammed together like sardines.

Hayley didn’t stop running.

Griffin locked the door and took off after her.

That door wouldn’t hold for long. Thirty seconds, at most.

They had to get on the train and leave. 2

Hayley rushed onto the platform, then froze for a split second.

“Where are they?”

She turned and spotted June’s group, the car already pulled up just ahead.

“Hayley, over here!”:

The ground around them was littered with zombie corpses.

Even as Hayley called out, Ben was still crouched there, digging out the last crystal core.

Hearing her, they started the engine again.

Ben scrambled into the vehicle.

Hayley frowned at the vehicle as it drove toward her, not in the mood to snap at them right now. The instant the vehicle reached the platform again, the glass doors behind her finally gave way.

Crash!

Crash!

Shards of glass exploded outward.

A tidal wave of zombies poured inside, and that was after the garage explosion had already pulled away most of the horde. Fairfield was nothing but zombies now.

Hayley glanced back at the flood surging in, grabbed Griffin, and leapt straight onto the roof of June’s vehicle.

Whoosh!

Chapter 842

“Who are you?”

Hayley stared at the two unfamiliar women.

“I saved them,” Beй said, turning around from the front passenger seat, practically glowing with pride. “There were a ton of zombies chasing then. They were exhausted and collapsed right on the tracks, about to get swarmed. I rushed in and pulled them out of the middle of the horde.”

The more she listened, the hotter her anger burned.

So that was why her order hadn’t been carried out immediately. This idiot had thrown everything off.

Good thing June and the others weren’t completely useless. They still managed to set off explosions and draw the zombies away.

Otherwise, Hayley would have been in real danger back in that underground garage.

“See that? I’m not some weak guy who only hides behind my sister and brother-in-law!”

Ben was still puffed up, still bragging.

Then someone grabbed him by the collar and yanked him halfway out of his seat.

A storm of punches came down on him. Hayley’s fists slammed into him again and again, heavy and fast.

“I’ve never seen someone this stupid in my life! What, did you drink too much tainted milk as a kid or eat fertilizer for dinner? Everyone else grows a brain. You grew a damn tumor! You weigh, what, 140? One-forty of that is crap. A dung beetle would think you’re heaven. Zombies would take one look at you and turn around. Even they won’t touch a brain full of crap like yours!”

The others fell silent.

Every word came with another punch. It didn’t take long before Ben’s face was so swollen he barely looked human.

“You useless trash, you stupid deadweight! Can’t do anything right, just make everything worse!”

Pinned under her fists, Ben took the hits, then suddenly roared back, “I’m not useless! Call me stupid all you want, but I’m not useless!”

Hayley met his stubborn glare and let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh. She released Ben, done with hitting him, and didn’t even spare him another look.

He was too stupid.

Dealing with someone like that felt like stepping in crap.

Taking down schemers and backstabbers could at least feel satisfying. Beating on someone this brainless just made her more annoyed.

You don’t argue with a pile of crap.

Hayley didn’t say another word to him or even look his way. The best way to deal with a mess like that was to pretend it didn’t exist.

Her silence only made Ben more worked up. He pointed toward the back seat, where the mother and daughter huddled together.

“Maybe I messed things up, but I saved them! Two real people! I didn’t hurt anyone, didn’t ruin your plan. I brought them back alive. What gives you the right to call me useless?”

Hayley pulled out a pair of earplugs, stuffed them in, and shut her eyes.

She swore to herself, the second they got out of here, she was leaving. She would never set foot in Clark Base again.

Right then, Spencer slammed the brakes.

Ben, still ranting, was thrown forward with a loud thud. Everyone else lurched ahead, too.

Only Hayley stayed steady, one hand locked tight on Griffin. She opened her eyes. “What happened?”

Ahead of them, the road was gone.

A trench had appeared out of nowhere, about 25 feet deep and over 30 feet wide, cutting off their path completely.

The car came to a stop.

From beyond the tracks, noise erupted.

A massive wave of zombies poured out of Fairfield, rushing straight toward them.

Beneath it all, Hayley heard it.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

That familiar vibration.

Chapter 843

Hayley looked out toward downtown Fairfield.

A cloud of green toxic fog was rising into the air.

And inside that fog, the giant zombie was coming.

“How is this possible?” June stared outside, stunned. “Why is the toxic fog rising this early?”

The moment she finished speaking, the two women in the back seat moved at the same time.

Each of them pulled out a syringe and lunged forward, aiming straight at Hayley and June in the front.

They were fast. So fast that June’s mind went blank.

Thud!

The syringes stopped just inches away, blocked by an invisible barrier. The next second, two sickening cracks rang

out.

Both women’s arms went limp, hanging uselessly.

Hayley had already snapped their wrists in a blur of motion. They tried to struggle, but her hands shot out and locked around their throats.

It all happened so fast that by the time anyone reacted, both women were already pinned in her grip, unable to

move.

“They’re not survivors,” June said, realization hitting late.

“You just figured that out?” Hayley tightened her grip, eyes cold. “Fairfield’s been pumping out toxic gas for over two years. No normal survivor could still be alive here.”

Other cities still had a chance. Fairfield didn’t.

No one lived here.

Except Kurt.

“Did Ascendant Creed send you?”

Hayley stared them down.

Their bodies twisted at unnatural angles. Up close, their skin didn’t look normal either. It wasn’t from the green gas. It was the pale, lifeless white of a corpse.

“Raarh!”

The daughter mutated first.

Right in front of Hayley, her eyes turned gray-white, her body jerking violently as her mouth split open. She lunged forward, snapping her jaws again and again at Hayley.

The next instant, her head snapped to the side.

A blade had buried itself dead center in her forehead.

Hayley dropped the newly mutated zombie daughter with a single clean strike. Right beside her, the mother

suddenly snapped, her body starting to mutate, too.

Hayley caught something strange. One of the woman’s eyes had already turned a cloudy gray, while the other was still normal.

It looked just like Griffin. 1

But that didn’t matter.

“Raarh!”

Even with only one eye fully turned, the mother erupted with full zombie strength, every trace of humanity gone. Hayley didn’t hesitate and ended her with one swift slash as well.

The whole thing took less than three seconds.

When the mother and daughter hit the ground, Hayley searched their bodies and found two numbered keycards.

Each card had a sword emblem printed on it.

The Sovereign Legion of Ascendant Creed.

Hayley pocketed the cards, her expression turning grim. They must have expected Kurt would fall into her hands and that she would come to Fairfield to retrieve something.

So they came, too.

Inside the car, everyone else looked just as tense.

June and the others felt a cold wave of fear wash over them. That rescue had nearly gotten them all killed.

Ben, seeing that the two people he had worked so hard to save had actually come with an agenda and then turned into zombies, looked completely shaken. It seemed like something inside him finally broke. He shut up for good.

“Why are we still sitting here? Move! Just drive, any way that’s open!” Hayley snapped.

Spencer slammed the gas and threw the car into reverse.

1

By then, zombies were already closing in from every direction.

Chapter 844

Bang!

A green zombie slammed into the car door.

Its body flattened on impact like an overripe tomato, fluids and shredded flesh bursting outward. Its once-defined features were crushed into a smear, nose caved in, lips mashed into its teeth, the bulging eyes shoved back int

their sockets.

But those cloudy eyes were already ruptured, leaking like burst yolks.

Even so, the zombie kept gnashing its ruined mouth, chewing nonstop. Its lips were a mangled mess, stuck to its gums and teeth, and with every bite, loose chunks of broken teeth fell out, dragging bits of torn flesh and gum

with them.

“Raarh, raarh, raarh!”

The zombie clung to the front of their vehicle, twisted and feral.

Screech!

Spencer executed a sharp drift, flinging the zombie off. The car spun hard at high speed, sending everyone inside. reeling.

By the time it stopped again, everyone felt like they were about to throw up.

Ben, somehow, clamped his mouth shut and held it in.

“What now?” Hayley gripped the seat and Griffin, steadying herself.

“There’s another trench ahead,” Spencer said, his expression tight as he looked back at her.

Another deep gap had opened up in front of them. This one was narrower, maybe 10 to 13 feet across.

On the left was a steep mountainside. On the right were the tracks, and beyond them, Fairfield. There were trenches both in front and behind them now.

The only direction left was up the mountain.

Hayley’s gaze fixed on the near-vertical rock face.

Abandoning the car and climbing up was a dead end.

Because of the toxic fog.

It was already rolling in from the depths of Fairfield, wave after wave like a rising tide. In two minutes at most, it would swallow this place whole.

The moment they left the vehicle, the fog would take them.

They might escape the zombies, but not the gas.

“Hayley, I’ve got an idea,” Zach said suddenly. “We build a path across the trench and drive over it!”

Hayley’s eyes lit up at the suggestion.

Her mind ran through the plan in a split second.

There was only one issue.

“But while we’re building it, you’ll have to hold the zombies off!” Zach added.

“No problem,” Hayley said without hesitation.

She pulled on a mask and pushed the car door open, stepping out first.

The fog would reach them in two minutes.

“Two minutes!”

“Got it!”

Zach, June, and the others rushed out, grabbing steel plates from the vehicle and materials from their inventory to start building a makeshift bridge.

“Griffin, go help them.”

“Got it, Captain Gorgeous.”

Griffin ran over and joined them.

At that moment, Ben got out, too. He looked around, then ran over to help with the bridge.

Everyone moved.
