Chapter 842

“Who are you?”

Hayley stared at the two unfamiliar women.

“I saved them,” Ben said, turning around from the front passenger seat, practically glowing with pride. “There were a ton of zombies chasing them. They were exhausted and collapsed right on the tracks, about to get swarmed. I rushed in and pulled them out of the middle of the horde.”

The more she listened, the hotter her anger burned.

So that was why her order hadn’t been carried out immediately. This idiot had thrown everything off.

Good thing June and the others weren’t completely useless. They still managed to set off explosions and draw the zombies away.

Otherwise, Hayley would have been in real danger back in that underground garage.

“See that? I’m not some weak guy who only hides behind my sister and brother-in-law!”

Ben was still puffed up, still bragging.

Then someone grabbed him by the collar and yanked him halfway out of his seat.

A storm of punches came down on him. Hayley’s fists slammed into him again and again, heavy and fast.

“I’ve never seen someone this stupid in my life! What, did you drink too much tainted milk as a kid or eat fertilizer for dinner? Everyone else grows a brain. You grew a damn tumor! You weigh, what, 140? One-forty of that is crap. A dung beetle would think you’re heaven. Zombies would take one look at you and turn around. Even they won’t touch a brain full of crap like yours!”

The others fell silent.

Every word came with another punch. It didn’t take long before Ben’s face was so swollen he barely looked human.

“You useless trash, you stupid deadweight! Can’t do anything/right, just make everything worse!”

Pinned under her fists, Ben took the hits, then suddenly roared back, “I’m not useless! Call me stupid all you want, but I’m not

useless!”

Hayley met his stubborn glare and let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh. She released Ben, done with hitting him, and didn’t even spare him another look.

He was too stupid.

Dealing with someone like that felt like stepping in crap.

Taking down schemers and backstabbers could at least feel satisfying. Beating on someone this brainless just made her more

annoyed.

You don’t argue with a pile of crap.

Hayley didn’t say another word to him or even look his way. The best way to deal with a mess like that was to pretend it didn’t

exist.

Her silence only made Ben more worked up. He pointed toward the back seat, where the mother and daughter huddled together.

“Maybe I messed things up, but I saved them! Two real people! I didn’t hurt anyone, didn’t ruin your plan. I brought them back alive. What gives you the right to call me useless?”

Hayley pulled out a pair of earplugs, stuffed them in, and shut her eyes.

She swore to herself, the second they got out of here, she was leaving. She would never set foot in Clark Base again.

Right then, Spencer slammed the brakes.

Ben, still ranting, was thrown forward with a loud thud. Everyone else lurched ahead, too.

Only Hayley stayed steady, one hand locked tight on Griffin. She opened her eyes. “What happened?”

Ahead of them, the road was gone.

A trench had appeared out of nowhere, about 25 feet deep and over 30 feet wide, cutting off their path completely.

The car came to a stop.

From beyond the tracks, noise erupted.

A massive wave of zombies poured out of Fairfield, rushing straight toward them.

Beneath it all, Hayley heard it.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.
