Chapter 844
Bang!
A green zombie slammed into the car door.
Its body flattened on impact like an overripe tomato, fluids and shredded flesh bursting outward. Its unce-defined features were crushed into a smear, nose caved in, lips mashed into its teeth, the bulging eyes shoved back into their sockets.
But those cloudy eyes were already ruptured, leaking like burst yolks.
Even so, the zombie kept gnashing its ruined mouth, chewing nonstop. Its lips werè a mangled mess, stuck to its gums and teeth, and with every bite, loose chunks of broken teeth fell out, dragging bits of torn flesh and gun with them.
“Raarh, raarh, raarh!”
The zombie clung to the front of their vehicle, twisted and feral.
Screech!
Spencer executed a sharp drift, flinging the zombie off. The car spun hard at high speed, sending everyone inside reeling.
By the time it stopped again, everyone felt like they were about to throw up.
Ben, somehow, clamped his mouth shut and held it in.
“What now?” Hayley gripped the seat and Griffin, steadying herself.
“There’s another trench ahead,” Spencer said, his expression tight as he looked back at her.
Another deep gap had opened up in front of them. This one was narrower, maybe 10 to 13 feet across. 1
On the left was a steep mountainside. On the right were the tracks, and beyond them, Fairfield. There were trenches both in front and behind them now.
The only direction left was up the mountain.
Hayley’s gaze fixed on the near-vertical rock face.
Abandoning the car and climbing up was a dead end.
Because of the toxic fog.
It was already rolling in from the depths of Fairfield, wave after wave like a rising tide. In two minutes at most, it would swallow this place whole.
The moment they left the vehicle, the fog would take them.
They might escape the zombies, but not the gas.
“Hayley, I’ve got an idea,” Zach said suddenly. “We build a path across the trench and drive over it!”
Hayley’s eyes lit up at the suggestion.
Her mind ran through the plan in a split second.
There was only one issue.
“But while we’re building it, you’ll have to hold the zombies off!” Zach added.
“No problem,” Hayley said without hesitation.
She pulled on a mask and pushed the car door open, stepping out first.

The fog would reach them in two minutes.
“Two minutes!”
“Got it!”
Zach, June, and the others rushed out, grabbing steel plates from the vehicle and materials from their inventory to start building a makeshift bridge.
“Griffin, go help them.”
“Gotit, Captain Gorgeous.”
Griffin ran over and joined them.
At that moment, Ben got out, too. He looked around, then ran over to help with the bridge.
Everyone moved.
Everyone except Hayley.
She stood behind the vehicle, facing the incoming horde.
