After hearing what Kurt said, Hayley fell into deep thought.

Serum X was being used within the Sovereign Legion, but from what she had learned earlier at Sovereign Industries, it was developed using zombie blood as its base material.

Could something like that really be used on people? What would happen if a Gifted used it?

Her mind drifted to the mother and daughter from the Sovereign Legion she had run into in Fairfield. Neither of them had felt like trained soldiers. In the end, they had both turned into zombies.

“Can you tell me what you’re actually researching?” she asked again.

“Evolution,” Kurt replied flatly.

Hearing it again, Hayley felt a wave of confusion.

“One last question. What’s the highest rank in Ascendant Creed? You’re an S-level employee, so you’ve got to be part of the core. You should know this.”

Kurt looked at her. “In Ascendant Creed, ranks A through C are just outer-tier staff. Only S-level and above are core members. Right now, the highest rank is SS-level. They’re the ones who make the big decisions. There are ten of them.”

Hayley immediately thought of Ruby’s ex. He seemed to be one of those SS-level members.

“But right now, Ascendant Creed doesn’t have a central” Kurt went on.

“Why not?”

“The core leader is still being created.” Kurt’s eyes lit

“What does that mean?”

“I’m tired.” Kurt cut the conversation off.

She picked up the half-eaten bone, wrapped it up, and hung it around the dog’s neck.

“Alright. Head back.”

“Woof, woof!”

With the meat hanging from its neck, the dog wagged its tail happily and circled around Hayley’s feet, clearly more attached to her now.

Animals had always liked Hayley. Big or small, they all seemed drawn to her.

Once everyone heard that Ruby had safely woken up, the tension finally broke. The tight expressions on their faces eased all at once.

“Boss, does that mean we won’t have to deal with Ascendant Creed anymore?”
