Chapter 853
As long as Hayley stayed home, Leonard was in the best mood.
Every time she went out, he worried nonstop. The worst part was that she never took him with her. Now that she didn’t need to leave anymore, he couldn’t have been happier.
Half an hour later, the shelter kitchen fired up again, and the smell of hot food filled the air.
Thomas, Jim, and the others were busy washing vegetables and cooking.
Since Hayley was eating at home today, she had them prepare a full spread. They cleaned fish, butchered chicken, cooked shrimp, and simmered meat. The shelter, quiet for so long, came alive again with the sounds and smells of a real meal.
Ever since they took the city, Hayley rarely ate at home. Most of the time, she just had boxed meals made by the chefs in the city.
But no matter how fresh those were, nothing beat food cooked right here.
Plate after plate was set on the table. Garlic butter shrimp, roasted chicken with gravy, grilled salmon, barbecue ribs, and fresh vegetables from her greenhouse, along with scrambled eggs.
Her shelter had everything, all of it fresh.
After everything she had been through outside, Hayley still felt like her own shelter was the best place there was.
By the time the table was completely filled, Alex had arrived.
“How’s your aunt?” That was the first thing he asked when he walked in.
“She’s been treated. She’s asleep.”
Alex’s cold, serious expression eased a little. He took in a deep breath of the rich aroma filling the room. “So why’d you call me over? Just to eat?”
“To write a report.”
Alex froze for a second, then just stared at her. He looked at the table full of food, speechless.
“If you wanted me to write a report, you could’ve just told me. You really dragged me all the way here for this?”
“I want you to write it here.”
Alex opened his mouth, then closed it again, completely at a loss
In his entire life, he had never met anyone like Hayley. She was more ruthless than he was and better at squeezing people dry.
He walked straight over to the table anyway, pulled out a chair, and sat down. Grabbing a set of utensils, he joined everyone and started eating.
“Not writing the report?”
“I can’t write on an empty stomach.”
This time, Hayley didn’t know what to say either.
Fine. Whatever. She was in a good mood today.

She smiled as she watched Alex eat. “Then eat up. After that, write me ten development reports. We’re taking the Haylight League to number one in the world. No, the universe.”
“Pfft!”
Alex nearly choked on his soup. She was feeding him scraps and expecting him to conquer the world.
“Alex, you’ve got to believe in yourself. You’re the best I’ve ever seen. I’ve got full confidence in you. What can’t you handle?”
The pitch was outrageous, but somehow, it didn’t sound that bad.
Alex let out a small snort. “At least you’ve got good judgment.”
Hayley might work people hard, but she knew talent when she saw it. At least she didn’t call Liam, who only knew how to manage the house. And she definitely didn’t call Milo, that reckless brute.
She called him and him alone. That proved one thing: in her eyes, he really was better than Liam and Milo.
On that, he had no doubt.
Alex enjoyed the meal quite a bit.
