“Hey, there.”

Hayley greeted him as she walked in, carrying two boxes of cookies.

Samuel’s face lit up the moment he saw the cookies. “You came, and that’s enough. You didn’t have to bring anything.”

“You’ve got a soft spot for these,” Hayley said. “I don’t come by often, so I figured I should make you happy.”

Samuel laughed even harder. “How did you turn out so well? If your useless brother had even half your sense, wouldn’t have to worry so much!”

As he spoke, he shot Liam a sharp look.

Liam stood there looking completely subdued, as if he had just been scolded.

“What happened to him?”

“What else? I’m worried about his future! He’s 28, pushing 30, and still single. He’s trying to make sure I never get any peace.”

“You should relax a little. This kind of thing depends on the right timing. You can’t rush it.” Hayley spoke up for Liam.

Samuel looked at her. “I’m not rushing, I’m frustrated. This boy of mine is a brick wall. He has feelings for someone, but he won’t say a word.”

“Grandpa!” Liam raised his voice.

“Quiet. Holly’s here today. If you won’t ask, I will. Holly!”

Liam panicked. His face flushed as he stepped forward and pulled Hayley aside.

Hayley shook his hand off. “What’s there to hide? Since your grandpa already knows, I might as well say it.”

Liam froze, completely at a loss.

Samuel’s eyes widened as he looked at Hayley. “You know, too?”

“Yeah. He told me a while ago. I came today to give him the final answer.” Hayley took a breath and looked at Liam with clear regret. “It’s not going to work, but we can still be family.”

Liam stood there, stunned into silence.

Hayley reached out and patted his shoulder. She leaned in slightly, lowering her voice so only he could hear. “Aunt Ruby didn’t accept Tavian, either.”

Liam blinked, still stunned. He looked at Hayley’s serious expression and let out a short laugh, the corner of his mouth lifting. The gloom on his face disappeared in an instant.

He looked at her, his eyes bright again.

Beside them, Samuel sank into deep disappointment after hearing Hayley’s answer.
