The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 864

Chapter 864

Their base director, Josh Willis, had led a group of their strongest people into the underground parts depot and gotten trapped inside.

They hadn’t even managed to bring out the canned meat or hard task.

Josh was Maisie’s husband. The base had been burk by the two of them from the ground up. Normally, Josh handled everything outside while Maisie managed things inside the base.

After something happened to him, Maisie had been frantic. She sent out rescue teams, but quickly realized that all the remaining fighters combined could barely handle a single high-level zombie. They couldn’t even make it inside.

After exhausting every option, she finally sent a distress call to Haylight League. As long as Hayley could bring Josh and the others back, she was willing to agree to any condition.

“Why ten people? Wouldn’t more make it easier?”

After hearing her out, Hayley asked the question calmly.

“No. It’s an underground tunnel. The oxygen is thin. We tested it. If more than 15 people go in at once, it becomes hard to breathe, let alone fight high-level zombies,” Maisie explained.

Hayley nodded, understanding.

“We still have five capable fighters left in West Sea Base. I was hoping your side could send ten. If we can get Josh back, I’ll agree to anything.”

Hayley looked at her, one brow lifting. “Anything? Aren’t you worried someone might take antage of that? What if they ask for something unreasonable, like you?”

Maisie didn’t hesitate. “Even if they want me, as long as Josh carybe saved, I’ll agree

Hayley paused, caught off guard for a second.

Well, there went her earlier impression.

She had thought Maisie was more of a hard, independent type, someone like Monica. But now, it was clear.

Maisie looked capable on the outside, but at her core, she was just a woman willing to give everything for the person she loved.

Hayley couldn’t relate. She would never throw herself away for a man. To her, she always came first, even when it came to her

aunt.

Ruby was the most important person in her life, without question. Even then, she would never lose her judgment or let herself be controlled completely.

She remembered a story she had seen before about a couple threatened by intruders. The attackers used the wife to force the husband to give up his weapons. In the end, both of thern died horribly.

To her, that kind of choice made no sense.

If it were her, she would have fought back immediately. If someone she cared about was hurt, she would avenge them. But she would never put down her weapon and turn herself into something helpless.

That was who she was.

She could risk her life for Ruby again and again. She could sneak into Sovereign Industries, knowing the danger. She could even prepare herself to spend the rest of her life hunting down enemies if something happened.

However she would never ofter herself up to Sovereign Industries as a bargaining chip.

That was a line she would never cross.

Her principles were clear.

She didn’t deny her feelings or the fact that she cared deeply, but no one outweighed her own life.

That was why she had never understood people who treated someone else as their entire existence.
