Chapter 873

Leah, who had been standing at the door, was Ricked back by the force behind it and sent flying.

Everyone in the room tensed instantly. At that same moment, Josh, who had been still until now, suddenly lunged forward and caught Leah, pulling her tight into his arms.

“Leah!”

“Josh, the zombies are coming. We’re going to die. Just tell me… Who do you choose?”

“Stop,” Josh uttered. “Don’t say another word, Leah. I choose you. You’re not dying!”

As he spoke, he tightened his grip around her. Flames burst to life around his body as he prepared to make a last stand against

whatever was outside.

When he looked up, however, there were no snarling zombies rushing in.

Instead, there was a group of heavily armed soldiers.

A full squad stood there with rifles and gear, sharp and composed. At the center was a woman in a down jacket. She lowered her leg from the kick, relaxed, and looked at them with mild interest.

“Well, would you look at that? A tragic love story.”

When Josh heard Hayley’s voice and realized she was human, his brow tightened even more.

Leah, still in his arms, stared at them in fear. “Who are you people?”

“We were sent by your deputy director, Maisie. We’re here to get you out,” Hayley said casually.

Behind her, Colin quickly added, “Mr. Willis, they’re from Haylight League! They came to rescue you!”

The moment the people in the room saw someone from their own base, they lit up with excitement.

“Colin!”

“Rescue finally came!”

“This is amazing!”

Josh’s expression eased a little. He helped Leah to her feet, still holding her. “Thank you. I’m Josh, director of West Sea Base.”

Hayley crossed her arms, a faint trace of sarcasm on her face. “I’ve heard the director and deputy of your base are deeply devoted. Guess I got to see that firsthand today.”

Josh’s ears reddened slightly. He felt like he had been caught in the act.

He quickly set Leah down.

The moment he let go, she let out a soft cry and winced. “I think I hurt my back.”

“Are you okay?” Josh frowned, concern showing clearly as he looked at her pale face.

“I can’t walk ” Leah’s eyes filled with tears, her voice soft and fragile.

Seeing that, Josh didn’t hesitate. He lifted her back into his arms.

“Let’s get out of here first.”

He carried Leah toward the door.

Hayley stood off to the side, unmoving, watching them with a cool expression.

As they brushed past, Lean shot Hayley a sharp look. There was irritation, suspicion, and even a hint of jealousy in it.

Hayley raised a brow but said nothing. She had no interest in other people’s personal drama, especially not right now.

Still, she made a mental note of Leah.

She glanced around the room. There were four or five others still inside.
