Chapter 897

“Are you out of your mind?! How could you even think about asking Clark to do something like that?”
Ben had been in the middle of training when he stopped cold, staring at Whitney as she rushed over to him.
“Just tell me if you’ll do it or not,” Whitney said, her face tight and shadowed.
“I won’t.”
Ben raised his fists again and went back to hammering the heavy bag.
Ever since Hayley and the others left, he had thrown himself into training like a man possessed.
He had made up his mind to become someone strong, someone who didn’t rely on anyone else. And one day, he would make his way to the so-called Haylight League.
Maybe it would take a year, maybe three; but no matter how long it took, he would push himself until he got there.
He wanted to stand in front of Hayley again like a real man and tell her, out loud, that he wasn’t as worthless as she once thought.
The thought of seeing her again made him hit harder.
Whitney stood off to the side, her voice edged with frustration. “After everything I’ve done for you, you can’t even help me with this?”
“That’s not helping you!” Ben shot back, not stopping. “You’re basically trying to set Clark up with another woman, and now you want me to convince him? What are you thinking?”
“It’s because I can’t have children.” Whitney’s voice broke as she looked at him. “Try to think about it from my side. Clark’s such a good man. How can I let his family line end with him?”
Ben let out a sigh, irritation clear in his voice. “Still, this isn’t the way to handle it. Clark loves you. There’s no way he’d accept another woman.”
“It’s exactly because he loves me that I can’t be selfish,” Whitney said quickly. “I’ve already talked to Fiona. She’s our cousin. We know her well. If she’s the one carrying the baby, I can trust her.”
“Yeah, you’ve really lost it,” Ben said flatly, no longer interested in arguing. He kept training. Whitney stood there for a second, then suddenly broke down, covering her face as she started to cry.
“Come on, Whitney,” Ben said after a moment, his voice softening as he let out a sigh. “Clark’s already dealing with enough. I’m not asking you to be like Ms. Reid and help him run things, but at least don’t make more trouble for him.”
“How is this making trouble?!” Whitney snapped, her eyes red. “Do you think this is easy for me? I love him. I’d do anything for him!”

“Then stop calling this love,” Ben said, turning to face her, his voice firm. “This isn’t helping anyone. You already messed me up before, made it hard for me to see things clearly. Now, you’re about to do the same to Clark. None of us needs this kind of over-the-top love. You’re hurting, but you’re making it worse for everyone else, too.”
Whitney froze where she stood.
If anyone else had said that, she wouldn’t have cared.
However, hearing it from Ben felt like a blade driven straight into her chest.
She had given everything she had to love them, and this was how they saw it?
Ben looked at her, his expression easing a little. “We know you care about us. No one’s denying that. But you need to trust yourself a little more. Clark really loves you. Instead of thinking about giving him a child, why not just be with him? All he wants is to spend his life with you.”
“Really?” Whitney asked, a flicker of doubt and insecurity crossing her face.
Not being able to have children had hit her harder than she ever expected.
