Chapter 898
Whitney stayed quiet most of the way. When she finally spoke, her voice was softer than before You really think that?”
Ben nodded. “Come on. You’ve got to believe in yourself.” 1
Something in his tone eased the tightness in her chest. She looked at him again, suddenly realizing how different he had been lately.
“Why do I feel like you’ve changed? Who’s taught you all this?”
“Ms. Reid,” Ben said without thinking.
Whitney narrowed her eyes at him. “You keep bringing up Ms. Reid. What are you hiding from me?”
“Nothing,” Ben said, brushing it off.
“No, something’s off,” Whitney pressed, studying him. “Ever since Ms. Reid showed up, you’ve been acting like a different person. Don’t tell me you’ve got a thing for her.”
“Like I’d even qualify,” Ben said with a snort. “I just want to make it to her Haylight League someday and see what it’s actually like.”
Whitney smiled faintly, something warm flickering through her expression. “Looks like you’ve finally grown up. I’ll talk to Clark later and see if he can get you a chance to go.”
“Seriously?”
“Why not? Ms. Reid reached out recently about setting up trade between our leagues. Sending you would actually make sense.”
They talked as they walked, stopping outside Clark’s office. When Whitney reached for the door, she hesitated for a second. “He really won’t mind…right?”
“He loves you, so of course he won’t,” Ben said as he pushed the door open.
The moment it swung wide, a dark shape lunged out like a wild animal and slammed straight into Whitney.
A guttural snarl ripped through the air.
In the same instant, a spray of hot blood splashed across Ben’s face.
Whitney’s throat had been torn open.
Ben’s mind blanked, but what shocked him even more was the one who did it.
Clark!
“Raarh, raarh!”

He didn’t look human anymore.
He pinned Whitney to the ground like a beast and tore into her neck, ripping through flesh and muscle with raw force. He chewed as if he were starving, the sound turning sickening when his teeth struck bone.
Ben froze for a heartbeat, then it hit him: Clark had turned.
“Aaaah! Whitney!”
Ben charged forward, fists flying as he slammed them into Clark’s head again and again, shouting through tears.
“Clark! Wake up! That’s my sister! That’s your wife, Whitney! Wake up!”
Clark only snarled in response, his voice reduced to nothing but broken, feral sounds.
Ben kept hitting Clark until Clark’s skull finally gave way, collapsing under the force. He dragged Whitney free, pulling her into his arms as he tried to press his hands over the torn artery in her neck. Blood kept pouring through his fingers.
At that moment, Fiona’s voice rang out.
“Ben! My mom and dad turned!”
Ben turned and saw her standing behind him, covered in blood, gripping a weapon in shaking hands. Her face was twisted with fear and pain. Blood dripped steadily from the weapon she held, making it clear what she had just done.
But what made his chest tighten was something else.
Her abdomen had been ripped open.
A massive wound gaped across her stomach, her intestines spilling out as she tried to hold them in with one hand, even as they slipped through her fingers.
“How did this happen… I just got them back,” Fiona sobbed as she staggered toward him. “We barely made it out of the first hell alive… Why do we have to go through it again…? Why…ugh!”
Her voice cut off.
The light in her eyes dulled, the color draining away as a gray, lifeless tone took over.
A low growl rose from her throat, and she lunged at Ben.
At the same time, Whitney’s body suddenly stiffened in Ben’s arms. Her head jerked, and she sank her teeth into the brother she loved most.
