Chapter 899
“Aaaah…!”
A scream tore through the office building at Clark Base.
Some words would never be spoken again.
Some people would never be seen again.
“Aaaah!”
At the same time, the same kind of scream echoed across every corner of the base.
Footsteps pounded, people shouted, and weapons struck; the sounds crashing into each other without pause. The base that once felt sealed tight and safe was now crawling with zombies.
People walking down the road suddenly turned and lunged at their own companions, tearing into them without warning.
Families sitting together, talking about the future over a meal, were ripped apart the next second, throats torn open before they could even react.
Soldiers stationed on the walls, focused on holding back the zombies outside, suddenly turned and became part of the horde themselves.
Low, broken snarls spread everywhere.
In the span of moments, Clark Base became a living hell.
At the same time, at West Sea Base.
High above, micro fighter jets streaked across the sky one after another, leaving behind faint trails of green haze.
The mood inside the base was tense and heavy.
Their base director had locked himself away and refused to see anyone.
“Josh still hasn’t come out?”
In the infirmary, a woman lay back on a bed, casually eating fruit as she spoke.
“No, Leah.”
Leah’s expression tightened the moment she heard her name, and she shot the subordinate a sharp look. “From now on, don’t call me Leah. Call me Ms. Berry! I’m the deputy base director now!”
“Got it… Ms. Berry.”
That title finally brought a hint of satisfaction to her face.
She had finally become the deputy director of West Sea Base. Maisie had even conveniently goren herself out of the way. It couldn’t have worked out better.
Leah felt so pleased that she could barely contain it.
She had expected some kind of struggle, maybe a fight before Maisie left instead, the woman walked away clean, leaving everything behind for her.
It made things easy.
The only thing that bothered her was Josh. Ever since Maisie left, he had been like a man hollowed out. He locked himself away and refused to come out all day.
“Ms. Berry, there’s a lot of work at the base that needs your attention.” The subordinate stepped forward with a stack of documents that used to be handled by Maisie.
Leah frowned the moment she saw them. “Then take them to Josh. Why would I handle this?”
“These have always been handled by the deputy base director.”
Leah reluctantly took the files, flipping one open, only to realize she couldn’t make sense of it. How was she supposed to deal with this?
“Everyone’s waiting on your instructions. If these aren’t handled soon, everything below will stall.”
Leah let out a cold huff. “Take them to Josh! From now on, he can handle all of it.”
“Mr. Willis isn’t allowing anyone to disturb him. We don’t dare go in.”
“You’re all useless,” Leah snapped as she climbed off the bed. “Fine! I’ll go myself.”
She had her subordinate gather the documents and follow her out. Before long, she stood outside Josh’s
room.
“Josh! Josh!”
She knocked for a long time, but there was no response from inside. Her patience snapped.
“Josh, if you don’t open this door, I’m coming in!”
Her hand had just touched the door when it creaked open from the inside.

“I’ve made up my mind,” he said quietly. “I’m going to find Maisie.”
Then he stepped past her and started walking.
Leah froze for a second before rushing after him. “What are you doing?”
“The person I love most is still Maisie,” Josh said without slowing down. “I’m going to find her. No m how far, no matter how long it takes.”
Maisie had walked away without looking back.
After Josh’s initial shock faded, he was swallowed by an overwhelming sense of emptiness. In that
ptiness, regret became sharper and clearer.
had always believed she would never leave him, so he got used to her being there. He stopped ticing her and forgot that she had become part of his life, as naturally as breathing.
she had never left, he never would have realized it.
Now that she was gone, everything about her came rushing back.
The way his heart moved because of her, the way he felt when he was with her….
That kind of love wasn’t something Leah could ever replace.
He understood now.
He finally understood, and he regretted it.
He had to find her. He had to ask for her forgiveness, no matter the cost.
“Stop right there!” Leah rushed forward and grabbed him. “I won’t let you go!”
“Let go,” Josh snapped, shaking her off.
Leah stumbled back and shouted, her voice sharp and bitter, “Maisie’s nothing but a worthless woman! She ran off with someone else and didn’t give you a shred of respect, and you still want to chase after her? Are you really going to humiliate yourself like that?”
The sound of a slap cracked through the air.
Josh’s hand struck her across the face.
“If it weren’t for you, Maisie never would’ve left,” he said coldly. “You pushed her away. I blame you!”
Leah collapsed to the ground, staring up at him in disbelief. “D-Don’t you love me anymore? I’m the one who loves you most!”
“Stop talking!”
