Chapter 902
A dense wave of zombies flooded back into the city Hayley had fought so hard to clear.
Boom!
Boom!
Explosions rolled across Brookville and Crestford in layered bursts.
Every trap she had set was triggered, one after another. Explosives, wire nets, and deep pits hidden beneath the ground went off
in sequence.
The buffer zone tore through large numbers of the horde as it fell piece by piece.
From above, Hayley watched it unfold, like a dark red tide spreading back into her territory.
The swarm had arrived.
The moment it reached the first defensive line of Haylight League, the interception systems activated at full capacity.
Every operator took a position along the front.
The bombardment didn’t stop. It lasted through the entire night.
Only by the next day did the tide begin to thin.
They had held against a million-strong swarm.
The buffer zone she had built made all the difference. Without it, the base would have faced that scale head-on.
A million.
At that level, most bases wouldn’t even have a chance to respond.
A few tens of thousands had already been enough to wipe out/West Sea Base. Even the three Ark bases wouldn’t have stood against something like this.
“Hayley, the three Ark bases were hit last night, too,” Alex said. “Luckily, their numbers were smaller than ours. Around a hundred thousand each. They’re holding for now.”
Aside from Hayley’s headquarters, the other three Ark bases had all faced incoming swarms.
Because of their locations, the surrounding zombies only gathered to that scale. With sealed containment measures in place, Ark One and Ark Three managed to stabilize the situation. Ark Two, however, had weaker defenses and was barely holding on.
Alex hesitated, then added, “Ascendant Creed sent a message. They said this was just the opening move.”
Hayley didn’t respond.
She stood on the wall, looking down at the field below, where bodies lay piled. A few stragglers still twitched and moved among
them.
She put a cigarette between her lips.
The lighter flicked in her hand, and the flame trembled. She tried more than once before it finally caught
She had been running on no sleep for days. Ever since crossing paths with Decider Three, she hadn’t rested once. Her eyes were bloodshot.
Watching her like this, Alex suddenly realized something he had ignored.

Hayley was still just a person, and a young one at that. Someone her age, before all of this, should have been out living a normal life, going out with friends, worrying about small things, getting upset, and leaning on family when it got too much.
And yet, she never had that She carried everything herself. No matter what happened, he had never seen her break.
