Chapter 903
Hayley raised her hand and smacked Alex on the top of his head, but there was none of her usual force behind it. By the time it landed, it felt more like a light tap.
“Seriously, how are you this spineless?
Alex didn’t know what to say. He didn’t argue with her, either.
“I’ve already run the numbers. If we move everyone to Ark One and build out an underground system, we can survive down there long term.”
Hayley let out a short laugh. “Like rats? Living underground, never seeing daylight again?”
“You can make fun of me all you want right now,” Alex said, looking straight at her.
He had already accepted that he was a coward.
But so what? He was terrified of dying. If that made him a coward, then fine. He would stay one all the way through.
“I just want you alive,” he said. “All of us, alive.”
Hayley’s smile only widened as she looked at him, watching the way he lowered his head, completely serious.
“How exactly are we supposed to live?” she asked. “Ascendant Creed is building a world for the zombies, a whole civilization around it. They want every living person wiped out. You want us hiding underground. How long do you think that lasts? A day, ten days, half a month?”
“That’s still living, isn’t it?” Alex shot back.
Hayley reached over and took her lighter and cigarette back from him. She flicked the flame on, steadying it with what strength
she had left.
“If we crawl through life, we still die. If we fight, we still die. If death’s coming anyway, I’d rather go out burning bright! Even if it kills me, I’m taking Ascendant Creed down with me. I don’t/run!”
She took a long drag, then turned and walked off.
Alex stared at her back, his heart pounding. “Then what are you going to do? What do we even have left to stand against them?”
“Tell Ascendant Creed to hold for three days,” Hayley said without looking back. “Have them send a plane to pick me up after that. If they don’t, I’ll kill myself.”
She was betting that they wanted her. A zombified version of her, at least.
They wouldn’t settle for a corpse.
It had come down to this.
There was no retreat left, not after the second outbreak, not after the global swarms.
Everything had led here.
She needed three days to set everything in place.
After returning to her shelter, Hayley slept for an entire day. When she woke that night, Alex had already brought back word
Ascendant Creed would come for her in two days, and they had halted all attacks.
Once she was up, Hayley began transferring vast stores of human knowledge and genetic archives into the deepest level of Ark
One. I
That was what remained of human civilization.
At the same time, she took part in Alex’s suggestion.

She would send a group underground, all of them students. If everything failed, at least something would survive.
The moment the decision reached them, however, the response came back just as fast.
