The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 910

Chapter 910

After hearing everything, Hayley stood there for a long moment before speaking

“Then forget it. We switch the group. Put out a broadcast. Anyone willing to evacuate can sign up until the remaining slots are filled.”

She had already set aside a portion of people to carry things forward. As long as they were human, they were worth saving

“Got it,” Alex said, nodding.

Hayley opened the vehicle and let all the dogs out. Under her firm, unyielding commands, the entire group was loaded onto the helicopters despite their reluctance.

Once her dogs were settled, she turned. “Where’s Kurt? Go ask him if he wants to send his dog, too.”

“Alright.”

Not long after, Kurt arrived with his dog.

“Oldman, you might deserve whatever’s coming, but your dog doesn’t,” Hayley said flatly. “There’s still space. If you want it to live, send it.”

Kurt listened, something complicated flickering in his aged eyes. He looked at the dog beside him for a long time, then let out a quiet sigh. “Go.”

“Woof! Woof!” The dog grabbed his sleeve and pulled back, trying to drag him away from the place.

“Get out of here,” Kurt said, his face hard as he shook it off.

The dog stumbled, whining as it crouched low on the ground, its wide eyes filled with fear and confusion.

Hayley stepped forward and barked out, “Move!”

At her voice, the dog forced itself up, swallowing whatever it felt, and slowly walked toward her, turning back every few steps to

look at its owner.

Kurt didn’t look back. He turned and left without hesitation.

Because if he stayed, he wasn’t sure he could let go.

He had no family. Only that dog he had raised for years.

Kurt had grown up in a family of scientists, his parents early members of Ascendant Creed, both gone long ago. He had never cared much for companionship, only for research. He spent decades buried in his work, never marrying, never having children.

When the world collapsed, he stayed behind alone in Fairfield.

One day, he found a puppy about to be torn apart. Its mother had already been killed, and it was left there, small and helpless, surrounded by starving zombies.

Kurt took it in and raised it from the time it was just a tiny puppy. He fed it milk, fed it meals, and slowly raised it into adulthood

The dog had never left his side.

“Woof! Woof!”

Now, from the helicopter, it barked desperately down at him.

Kurt, pushing his wheelchair away, heard it. Something twisted in his chest. For the first time, the resolve he had always believed unshakable seemed to waver

Had he been wrong?

He didn’t dare stay.

He turned the wheels faster, leaving as if running from it.

Hayley watched him go but said nothing, turning instead to Alex. “Where’s Aunt Ruby? Did she leave?”

“She won’t go,” Alex said.

Hayley frowned and went to find Ruby.

Half an hour later, she returned, carrying Ruby, who had been knocked unconscious. After placing her carefully into the helicopter, she turned to Alex.

“Are the others filled in?”

“No,” Alex said, shaking his head. “No one else showed up.”
