Chapter 126 Midnight Rescue
Chapter 126 Midnight Rescue
They looked up to see Mr. Crow flapping his wings hard, clutching a chubby, half-asleep little bat in his claws. He landed on the taxi roof, panting.
Sophia gaped at the scene, pointing at the roof. “Ms. Summer… This is the bodyguard we summoned? Really?”
Nina opened the car door like it was the most ordinary thing ever. “Yep! Top-notch team, ready whenever we
need!
“They can fly straight to your friend’s place. No squeezing in for a ride, no splitting a taxi, super budget-friendly!”
As the taxi began to roll, Mr. Crow instantly jabbed the chubby bat on the head with his beak. “Hey! Rise and shine! Weight loss boot camp, starting now!
“Take off! Take off! And make sure to memorize the way while you’re at it.”
The chubby bat whimpered, grumbling as he cracked open his beady little eyes and let out a massive yawn. After the traffic light, go left…”
Before he could finish, his head drooped again, and he flopped back down onto the roof, already nodding off.
Mr. Crow was absolutely ticked off. He snatched the bat by the scruff and shook him hard, feathers flying.” Caw! You lazy bum! Sleep all day, up all night! Get moving! Snap out of it!”
The bat was so dizzy from all the shaking that his four little paws flailed everywhere. “Argh, Mr. Crow, quit it! I’ m gonna hurl! Seriously, I’m gonna puke!
“I’ll fly. I swear!”
And so, an absolutely weird sight appeared in the city’s night sky.
A taxi rolled smoothly toward the old district, while right above the roof, Mr. Crow flew furiously low, clutching a chubby bat by the scruff and pecking at his head like he was trying to knock some sense into a wayward kid.
The chubby bat was getting pecked so much he was almost in tears, but he forced his eyes open wide, doing his best to call out directions. “Ahead… Take a right at the next corner…
“Come on, Mr. Crow, quit it! I swear I’m not asleep this time!”
Mr. Crow’s squawking echoed across the night. “Caw! Who are you kidding? Get moving!
“If you keep dragging your feet, I’m docking half your mealworm for tonight!”
The taxi driver was totally oblivious to the chaos on the roof, just happily driving along, following the GPS.
In the back seat, Nina and Sophia exchanged a knowing look. Nina was shaking with suppressed laughter, while Sophia listened to the squawking overhead and sighed, “This bodyguard team is definitely budget- friendly.”
The taxi rolled to a stop in front of a bunch of rundown old apartment buildings in the city’s old district. The buildings were packed tight, their facades chipped and faded. Narrow hallways wound through the place, barely lit, with laundry lines tangled up between windows.
Nina stepped out and paused for a second, her eyes going distant. Scenes like this were way too familiar.
Back when the Summer family kicked her out, she’d dragged her suitcase into places like this, just trying to get by.
The neighbors here might be friendlier, but with busted-up facilities and all kinds of folks coming and going, you never knew what kind of trouble could be waiting.
Sophia explained quietly, “Shortly after she quit her job, things fell apart at home, and money got tight. She really had no choice but to rent a place here for now.
“Her elderly landlady’s been taking care of her Honestly, treats her just like a granddaughter.”

Nina nodded, her voice soft. “I understand.”
They climbed the narrow stairs up to the third floor and knocked on an old iron door covered in flyers. A thin, frail girl opened up. Her face was ghostly pale, with heavy bruised shadows beneath her eyes. When she caught sight of Sophia, the tiniest flicker of life came back to her dull gaze.
But as soon as she saw Nina, that flicker vanished, freezing right there in her eyes.
She just stood there, completely frozen, her fingers clutching the edge of the doorframe.
Nina tilted her head, looking at her softly. “Have we met somewhere before?”
Emily flinched, like she’d just been stung, and shook her head fast, her voice dry and a little shaky. “N-no… You must have me mixed up with someone else.”
Nina didn’t push it, just offered a faint smile.
But Nina could tell that Emily was hiding something.
They definitely had met before.
The Summer Veterinary Group had branches all over town.
Maybe they ran into each other at one of those inter-branch meetings, or maybe at a training session.
Emily looked way too freaked out for it to be just a simple case of mistaken identity.
Sophia quickly jumped in with a smile. “Emily, this is Ms. Summer. She’s the one I keep telling you about. She’s always been so kind and takes care of all of us!”
Nina stepped forward, wearing a gentle smile. “Hey Emily. Sophia talks about you all the time. It’s a little treat, and I hope it helps you unwind.”
She handed over the snacks she’d brought with her.
Emily accepted the gifts, her fingers gripping them a little tighter. “Thank you.”
She stepped aside to make room, her tone a little stiff. “Come in. Have a seat.”
The room was small but tidy, and the three of them squeezed onto the couch.
Emily glanced at the clock on the wall, rubbing her throbbing temples, her voice heavy with exhaustion. “I have to work a part-time job early tomorrow, but I’m so out of it right now. I keep messing up even the simplest cash register tasks.
“My boss already warned me. If I keep zoning out like this, he’s going to fire me.
“He says I keep spacing out, and it’s freaking out the customers.”
Nina’s eyes lit up, and she didn’t hesitate to invite her. “Emily, have you ever considered joining our team at the ZOO?
“We’re really in need of experienced vets. The vibe is super relaxed. The animals are so soothing to be around. It’s like therapy.
“If you’re interested, I can even get you an advance on your pay, and we have staff apartments, which are private, quiet, and totally safe.”
Sophia’s eyes went bright too, nodding like crazy. “Totally! Emily, come join us! It’d be awesome working together!”
But Emily flinched like she’d been stung, jerking her head up, panic flickering in her eyes.
Her fingers clenched the hem of her shirt, and her voice came out tight and hurried. She said, “No need… Thank you.”
She froze for a moment, forcing the words out as if they took everything she had. “I… I don’t want to be a vet
anymore.
“Seriously, it’s fine. I mean it.”
