Chapter 127 Break The Deadlock

Chapter 127 Break The Deadlock

Nina asked with a puzzled look, “Isn’t the landlady having health Issues? I thought her eyesight was so bad she could barely see the screen.

“Why did she choose to send a text instead of a voice message?”

Emily’s fingers flew over her phone, voice strained. “She uses some regional dialect from Cloudville. She’s worried I won’t catch what she’s saying.

“Her phone has a feature that recognizes dialects. That’s how she usually messages me.”

Emily paused, her breath suddenly hitching. “There was this one time she got sick out of nowhere and called me in a panic to help.

“I’ve told her over and over again that if anything happens, she needs to come to me immediately!”

Emily jumped up, sounding even more frantic. “No, I need to rush and grab her meds right now. What if it’s really her heart acting up?”

Nina reached out and grabbed Emily’s arm. “Wait, don’t rush off yet. Just call her first and listen to hear if it’s really her!

“What if it’s some shady person, using the landlady’s phone to lure you over?”

Emily took a deep breath and dialed the phone.

After a few rings, urgent and tangled dialect burst through the speaker, the voice hoarse and mixed with heavy, labored breaths, exactly like she sounded during one of her episodes.

Emily’s face instantly went pale. She glanced up at Nina, her voice shaking despite herself. “Now, do you believe me? She’s really having an attack.”

Nina quickly hit record to save that dialect message and sent it to Simon with a voice note. “Simon, here’s the message from the person asking for help. We can’t make out what she’s saying. Can you get someone from Cloudville to listen to it?”

Simon always insisted Nina check in with him every time she headed out.

Tonight, before she left, Nina had already sent Simon her destination with a brief rundown of what was happening.

That really paid off. Now that an emergency hit, they didn’t have to waste any time scrambling to figure things

out.

Simon replied right away, [Hang tight, I’m coming over now.

I’ve sent the audio to my colleagues. If anything’s wrong, we’ll send help immediately.

I’ve already called an ambulance from the hospital closest to you.]

Nina glanced at the three lines on her screen. Simon had every possible angle covered. She took a deep breath, and the tight knot in her chest finally began to loosen.

By now, Emily already had her shoes on and was just about to open the door. Nina quickly stopped her, looking up anxiously. “Which exact unit does the landlady live in?” Emily’s face went white as she pointed out the window. “Next building, second floor, 203.

“Just cross over through the walkway. Her door’s covered in flowers, you can’t miss it.”

“Let’s go together,” Nina said, grabbing her arm. “It’s safer if we stick together.”

She hadn’t forgotten that she still had her secret weapon.

Nina turned to the chubby bat by the window, who was busy munching on Emily’s leftover snacks, and whispered, “Chunky, can you check if there’s anyone outside the door?”

Chunky flapped his wings a couple of times and mumbled, “Safe It’s safe. No one else!”

Chapter 127 Break The Deadlock

The three of them hurried out the door.

At Nina’s urging, they all made sure to keep their steps as quiet as possible.

As Nina hurried after them, she pulled out her phone and dialed. “Mr. Crow, we’ve got an emergency!

“Get over to 203 in the next building, fast! Check through the window or the air vent. If you spot anything weird, let me know right away!”

A sharp caw came from the other end of the line. “On it!”

The three of them tucked themselves into a narrow alley by the walkway, crouching low in the shadows near a window, barely daring to make a sound as they held their breath.

Emily’s eyes were teary, and just as she was about to dart out, Nina pulled her back hard.

“I’ve already sent Mr. Crow to scout ahead,” Nina whispered, her voice tense, each word edged with anxiety.” We don’t know what’s waiting for us. We can’t just go charging in blindly.

“If we don’t keep ourselves safe, there’s no way we can help the landlady!”

Emily was shaking from head to toe, her voice choked by sobs she just couldn’t hold back. “But what if… What if it’s already too late?”

Just then, a dark shadow shot across the night sky and landed lightly on Nina’s shoulder.

It was Mr. Crow, back from his scouting mission.

His feathers were a bit ruffled as he leaned in close, whispering urgently in her ear. “Don’t go. Don’t go! I peeked through the gap in the exhaust fan and found a man standing behind the door.

He’s wearing a gray hoodie, not moving at all.”

When Nina heard that, her stomach dropped. Instinctively, she pulled both Emily and Rose closer, her voice low and urgent. “Mr. Crow says that a man is crouching by the door.”

At those words, Emily and Rose’s faces instantly drained of color.

They traded a look, terror and unease written all over their eyes as they realized just how bad things might be.

Nina motioned for silence and hurriedly pulled the other two with her, moving quietly away from the open walkway where they might get spotted, until all three of them ducked into the shadows around the corner,

where it was safer.

Only then did she urgently whisper to Mr. Crow perched on her shoulder, “What about the landlady? Is she okay?”

Mr. Crow flapped his wings in frustration, his little head bobbing. “The landlady collapsed on the floor. Her hands won’t stop shaking. She’s struggling to breathe.

“I’m pretty sure it’s her heart. It must be that shady guy spooked her!”

“The landlady is having a heart attack. She needs her emergency meds right now!” Nina was almost frantic, her blood boiling, panic flooding her voice. “But that bastard is holed up inside! We can’t even get to her!”

At that moment, Nina wished she could just channel Simon’s guts, kick down that door, and finish that scumbag once and for all.

Nina forced herself to chill, fighting the panic as her brain whirled, trying to come up with something.

“We have to cause a scene to freak him out and get him running. That’ll buy us time to save the landlady!” Nina blurted, her voice sharp and anxious.

Then, just as quickly, a cold dread gripped her. “But what if that creep doesn’t take the bait? What if he grabs the landlady and uses her as a hostage?”
