The Fake Heiress and Her Purrfect Partner novel Chapter 165

Chapter 165

Chapter 165

Quentin had seen real action-his reflexes were insanely sharp.

The instant he caught the sound of wings flapping, he threw his arm up to guard his face.

A bunch of hens came crashing past him, some even swooping right over his head!

Quentin instinctively retreated from the RV doorway onto the lawn.

As soon as he found his footing, he stared wide-eyed at the “main force” charging in behind.

Wave after wave of hens came pouring in, clucking and squawking like it was a full-blown chicken parade, flooding straight into his fancy RV.

With a loud clatter, the dog food bowl slipped from Quentin’s hand and crashed onto the ground.

Nina thought, ‘Oh crap, we’re totally doomed. She kept her head down, trying to slip past Quentin and rush into the RV to do some damage control, not even daring to look him in the eye.

But she’d barely taken two steps when a big hand grabbed her by the back of her collar.

Quentin’s voice came out low and dangerous, each word squeezed through gritted teeth. He said, “Nina!

“Aren’t you the one who swore up and down that the hens would never escape?”

Nina hunched her shoulders, looking all sheepish as she tried to bluff her way through.

She mumbled, “We have staff check on the coop every single day, you know.

“I’m guessing it had to be some little rascal trying to swipe a chicken or something!”

Seeing Quentin’s face grow even darker, Nina hurriedly steered the conversation away. She pointed toward the inside of the RV.

She called out, “Forget about all that for now! Look, that one-it’s about to squat.

“No, stop! It can’t just go wherever it pleases!”

Quentin’s brow twitched, and he immediately forgot about grilling her-he shot straight into the RV.

Right there and then, Quentin and Nina became an impromptu chicken rescue squad.

Nina zeroed in on a hen trying to dart under the couch and dove for it/

But she missed completely, accidentally crashing straight into Quentin as he circled from the other side, sending them both sprawling onto the couch.

They instantly got tangled up together, making such a commotion that the hens-who’d barely settled-took off again, flapping wildly in every direction.

Just then, Shadow, all fired up and ready to help, came barreling into the RV.

The moment Shadow hit the scene, it was like someone had lit a fuse-chaos exploded to another level.

The hens went completely haywire, flapping and scattering for their lives. Drinks went flying off the table, and with a dramatic rip, the curtains got yanked right down.

Feathers filled the air, chickens squawked, and dogs barked-absolute pandemonium inside the RV.

Amid the chaos, two hens, desperate to escape Shadow, came barreling straight for Nina’s face.

Quentin moved faster than thought, pulling her into his arms and shielding her head.

Nina found herself pressed against his chest, his cool scent filling her senses. Her cheeks grew hot, and her heart thudded wildly.

Nina thought, ‘This isn’t gonna work-catching them one at a time is way too slow!

‘Come on, think-there’s gotta be a faster way!’

Nina darted over to Quentin, pressed right up to his ear, and whispered her idea as quickly and quietly as she could.

Quentin shot her a look, one eyebrow arched, and skepticism written all over his face. He asked, “Seriously? You honestly think that’ll do anything?”

Nina shoved him and said, “Unless you’ve got a miracle up your sleeve, quit stalling and just try it!”

Quentin stared at the chaos unfolding, then gave the most grudging nod imaginable.

Then, Nina suddenly shouted at the top of her lungs, throwing herself into a dramatic performance, “Run for your lives,

Hens! Scatter!

“This guy right here is the evil overlord behind an entire fried chicken empire!

“His fancy RV, his whole business-all bought with cash from selling fried chicken!

“He’s just waiting for you to waddle in so he can haul you all straight off to the chopping block!”

With that, Nina spun around and clung to Quentin’s arm with all her strength, putting on her best desperate act like she was trying to rein in a total supervillain.

Shouting at the hens, she cried out, “I’m keeping the bad guy busy! Save yourselves, Hens! Back to the coop-it’s your only haven!”

That trick with the crazy rumor worked instant magic-it was like casting a spell!

The hens, who’d been raising absolute havoc in the RV, heard Nina and were scared out of their little chicken minds.

They frantically flapped their wings, tripping over themselves to rush out the door, fleeing for the coop as if the Colonel himself was chasing them-gone in the blink of an eye!

Finally, peace returned to the world.

Quentin and Nina stood in the aftermath, both looking like they’d barely made it out alive-hair wild, outfits rumpled, speckled with tiny white chicken feathers.

Only then did Nina realize she was still latched onto Quentin’s arm, practically glued to his side.

She let go like she’d touched a hot stove, her cheeks flaming red as she bowed her head and fussed with the feathers on her clothes, muttering under her breath, “Just crisis management, you know. Special emergency.”

Quentin looked at Nina-her cheeks flaming red, her whole appearance a chaotic mess-and realized all the frustration he’d meant to unload on her was long gone.

The hen scratches streaked across his face, glaringly visible on those sharp features.

She kicked into full-on groveling apology mode, anxiously tiptoeing up and plucking the bits of white chicken feathers out of Quentin’s hair, all the while babbling, “Sorry, sorry! My bad, totally my fault!

“Seriously, I’m so, so sorry! I’ll clean it up right now, promise!”
