Chapter 183 Sneak Attack
Chapter 183 Sneak Attack
A magpie with dazzling feathers swooped in from the distance, sporting its elegant black-and-white tuxedo.
Its long tail feathers swept an elegant arc through the air, landing gracefully right in front of Nina.
It said, “Ms. Summer! Let me explain what happened! So, a little earlier, I was uh, not stealing anything-just minding my own business, you know.”
The magpie gave a sheepish cough. “Anyway, that’s not important!
“What’s important is, suddenly I heard this loud rustling up in the treetops, and then something big just jumped right on top
of me.”
Magpies have always loved to build their nests spacious and impressive, usually choosing the tallest trees as their homes.
Only thick branches could support their fancy duplex nests, so they always had a clear view of whatever was happening high up.
The magpie cocked its head, scratching at the ground with its tiny claws. “It was this massive beast with three sharp tails!
“Kinda chunky in the middle, and on both sides, those long, thin tendrils just swaying all over the place!
“I was just leaning in, curious about what kind of freaky creature it was-then bam! Outta nowhere, it burst into flames!” The magpie fluttered its wings in total frustration. “Even my luxury nest got completely toasted! Not a single stick left!”
Nina echoed, still confused, “Are you talking about something big and shaped like a triangle?”
“Yeah, you know, one of those flimsy things that just float around up in the sky,” the magpie said, flapping its wings for emphasis.
“I see them all over in your human parks-adults and kids can’t get enough of them.
“Grab onto a long string, and that triangle-shaped thing just rides the wind and takes off.”
Nina’s eyes narrowed sharply as she realized something. “It’s a kite!” she blurted out.
Nina leaned forward, urgent. “Exactly what color was it?”
The magpie cocked its head, trying to remember. “It was white, kind of ugly. Not like those bright, cheery kites everyone flies at the park.”
Nina quickly translated for Simon. “It said it was a pure white kite. That color blends right into the sky, making it super hard to spot.”
Simon’s gaze turned sharp. “Looks like the perp lashed fuel and a trigger right onto that kite.
“They controlled it from afar, guiding it right over the fence into the forest out back-and set the whole place ablaze!” Oliver Stern from the fire squad’s face darkened. “That’s one wicked trick!”
“Didn’t even need to step foot inside to torch the joint. Dropped in from above-over ten meters up-totally dodged every ground camera.”
Nina felt a surge of relief-they still had their bird scouts keeping watch for them. Suddenly, an idea popped into her head.” Once the kite was burned up, there should be bits of its skeleton left behind, shouldn’t there?”
Oliver spun and shouted, “Everyone, heads up! Sweep the site for any leftover kite skeletons-pay close attention to any charred, skinny wooden sticks!”
Nina deduced, “The culprit must have calculated the wind direction and released the kite string at just the right moment. “To get the kite to accurately glide into the woods behind the zoo and get caught there, the operator had to be somewhere nearby.”
Simon glanced at his phone, checking the weather. “It’s all southwest wind today.
“Let’s comb through the northeast side of the zoo-see if we can find anyone, or any birds, who saw someone flying a white kite.”
The magpie rolled its eyes playfully, circling Mr. Crow with a mischievous look. “Uh, I’m outta here! If I catch any new leads, I’ll come right back and spill!”
“Wait up, little magpie!” Nina called, hurriedly digging for her stash of special bird biscuits. “Thanks for-”
Before she could finish, the magpie swooped Successfully unlocked! matching a couple of Mr. Crow’s glossiest
feathers straight from his fluffy coat!
Then, turning into a streak of black and white light, it zipped across the sky and disappeared in an instant.

Chapter 183 Sneak Attack
Mr. Crow, totally blindsided, blew his top-his feathers poofed out and he hopped around furiously on the spot. “Ah! That damn rascal magpie swiped my feathers! What the fuck!
“That rascal just can’t quit sneaking around! I never should’ve tried to team up with that magpie!”
Magpies, the master builders of the bird world, have a notorious habit of decorating their nests with feathers they’ve swiped from their neighbors.
It was not just for the looks, either-a nest lined with stolen plumage was basically their own DIY winter comforter.
Of course, when it comes to collecting these “building supplies,” magpies live by a strict zero-cost policy. Sometimes they just scoop up whatever feathers have dropped naturally, thinking of it as nature’s free gift.
And if a particular feather catches their eye, well-magpies have no shame in pulling off a sneaky smash-and-grab while the owner’s distracted or having a nap.
Nina had never seen Mr. Crow-the stingiest bird around when it came to his own feathers-actually get plucked by someone else!
He was always the one scheming and ripping off others, but today that rascal magpie flipped the script and took him for a ride!
He totally took a fall right in the gutter!
Minus his prettiest feather, Mr. Crow looked more gloomy and downbeat than ever.
He moped on Nina’s shoulder, burying his head in his wings and letting out a low, miserable whimper.
Nina couldn’t help but feel both sorry for him and amused at the same time. She gently stroked his ruffled feathers. There, there. Sure, you lost a feather, but once we crack this case, you’ll get another shiny medal to show off!”
That did the trick.
Mr. Crow, who had been sulking just a second ago, instantly perked up, flapping his wings and lifting his head high.
“You know what, you’re totally right! I’m heading out to investigate in the northeast-no way I’m coming back without some bird witnesses!” Mr. Crow declared.
He spread his wings and took off into the sky, though with that patch of missing feathers, he looked a bit uneven and scruffy.
But the determined way he puffed out his chest, trying to act tough, was both courageous and pretty hilarious-you couldn’ t help but grin watching him go.
All the visitors had been safely evacuated to a secure area, and the fire scene was cordoned off with bright, eye-catching tape.
Even though no visitors were hurt in the incident, Nina still stepped up and made a promise to everyone present. Anyone with a ticket or reservation for today could come back and visit the zoo for free at any time in the future.
Her decision was met with unanimous praise from the crowd.
“Ms. Summer, you’re way too generous! That live-action ‘firefighting ape’ show was totally worth the ticket price!”
“Ms. Summer really has a big heart! Putting out the fire and fixing up the forest must’ve cost a fortune, right?”
“We’ll definitely be back! And next time, we’ll buy tickets to support you!”
Seeing that most of the visitors understood and supported the zoo’s efforts, Nina sincerely thanked them all.
