Karim gently ran his hand along Silkcloud’s smooth neck, frowning. “It started about two months ago. Silkcloud would suddenly freeze up on the track and let out these restless whinnies.”
He let out a weary sigh. “None of the vets we’ve called could figure out what’s wrong.”
Westin’s fingers moved gently over Silkcloud’s joints and muscles, his eyes sharp and focused. “From what you’ve described, I suspect Silkcloud’s problem isn’t physical; it’s psychological.”
He said confidently, “Mr. Karim, you can rest assured. I grew up on the farm among horses, and if anyone knows how to connect with these proud creatures, it’s me.”
Then Westin deftly took the reins and led Silkcloud toward the state-of-the-art imaging equipment nearby.
Surprisingly, the priceless Akhal-Teke just trotted after him, calm as could be.
Claire saw this and immediately signaled, and the six experts jumped into action.
The team moved with practiced precision, each person knowing exactly what to do.
Some operated the ultrasound machine, others monitored Silkcloud’s vital signs, and a few prepared to collect samples. The whole checkup ran like a well-oiled machine.
Karim finally nodded in satisfaction. “The Summer Group really knows what they’re doing.”
The other vet teams watched anxiously, but all they could do was wait in line, hoping for their chance once the Summer Group finished up.
Plenty of them were stretching their necks, trying to catch a glimpse of the real-time images on the screens.
Soon, Silkcloud was completely surrounded by vets, packed in so tight that no one could squeeze through.
Nina couldn’t squeeze past her fellow vets, and her line of sight was completely blocked. She could just barely catch a glimpse of Silkcloud’s head held high through the gaps in the crowd.
She had no intention of joining the commotion. Instead, she stepped back and quietly watched the beautiful white horse from a distance.
What she really cared about was whether Silkcloud would act up or show any odd behavior with all these strangers crowding around during the exam.
She thought, ‘Maybe he’ll actually speak up and let us know what’s wrong.
Karim noticed that Nina wasn’t trying to squeeze into the center of the action. Instead, she stood calmly on the edge, surveying the scene with quiet confidence.
He couldn’t help but whisper to Quentin, “Is Ms. Summer really the only vet you brought?”
Quentin glanced at Nina’s composed figure, smiling. “She’s all I need.”
Karim cast another look at Nina.
The way she stood there, so calm and collected, was totally at odds with the crowd of experts craning their necks for a better view. She almost looked awkward.
However, when Karim saw Quentin looking so sure of himself, a hint of suspicion crept in. Still, the question died on his lips.

He thought, ‘Is the legendary Mr. Hayes actually head over heels for Ms. Summer? Maybe he didn’t bring her here to treat the horse at all; he just wanted to give her a chance to rub shoulders with the big shots.
Claire gripped the high-tech scanner, meticulously scanning every inch of Silkcloud.
The expert team was glued to the monitors, eyes locked on the live feed, every move sharp and professional.
However, Silkcloud was done with this. He tossed his graceful neck and snorted in obvious annoyance, making it clear it was over all this fussing.
Nina listened closely, catching every bit of his complaint.
Silkcloud said, “All this training, all that pedigree, and he still doesn’t understand me. Turns out, just like the rest, he’s all show, no substance.”
Silkcloud’s voice was cool and clear, floating through the air with effortless grace, like a prince from a cartoon.
Silkcloud sounded disappointed. “Stupid humans. How many times do I have to go through this same old useless routine? You haul out those clunky machines and poke around every time, and for what? Nothing.”
He tossed his mane. “There’s something super thin and tiny running through my veins. Didn’t your fancy machines catch that? Can’t you guys just use your heads and try something different for once?”
‘Wait, is there really something tiny moving around in Silkcloud’s veins?’ Nina thought. Her mind raced, running through all the possibilities.
She thought, ‘Could it be a leftover surgical thread? A broken needle tip? Or maybe some tiny bit of synthetic material that’s hard to spot?’
Quentin noticed how focused she was and leaned in. “Did you catch something?”
Nina snapped back to reality, turning to meet his gaze. Her eyes sparkled, and a sly grin tugged at her lips. “Yep, I’m close enough.”
She patted her chest with confidence, her movements light and a little smug. “Just watch. I’ll fix this horse in no time, and we’re gonna cash in together.”
Quentin couldn’t help but smile at her “leave it to me” vibe, though he kept his usual calm on the surface. He just nodded slightly. “Alright, let’s see what you can do.”
Just then, Claire finished scanning Silkcloud.
She grabbed the hot-off-the-press report, her gaze flicking over to Nina, who was left out on the edge of the crowd. A smug smile crept onto her lips.
She thought, ‘She can’t even get close to the center of the action. Does she really think she stands a chance against me?”
Claire walked quickly over to Westin and passed him the report.
Westin gave it a ‘quick look, staying cool as ever. “Looks like your vascular system is all clear. Alright, Silkcloud, time for the
next check,”
Just as he was about to lead Silkcloud away, a crisp voice called out from the edge of the crowd. “Silkcloud, come here.”
All the vets crowded around Silkcloud turned to look, only to see Nina standing a short distance away, beckoning Silkcloud
over.
