He thought, ‘Wait, she understands me. She truly does. Finally, a vet who actually gets what I’m going through and knows where it hurts.’
He said, “Here I come.”
Under everyone’s stunned gazes, the proud Akhal-Teke, Silkcloud, pranced over to Nina like an excited puppy.
Claire and Westin, standing right in front of Silkcloud, didn’t even have time to react before he gave a dismissive toss of his massive head and shoved them aside.
Westin was knocked so hard that the papers in his hand went flying up into the air.
Claire, still nursing a back injury, landed squarely on her butt with a loud thud, all dignity lost.
Silkcloud raced toward Nina like a streak of lightning.
Just as he was about to reach Nina, he slowed down with elegant poise, dropped to his knees in a flawless bow, and lowered his head respectfully.
He said, “Dear doctor, I’m putting all my hopes in you. Please, save me from this pain.”
Karim was left speechless. He grabbed Quentin’s sleeve excitedly. “Holy crap. Silkcloud actually bowed on his own. He’s usually so proud; he won’t even do that for me.”
Seeing Silkcloud treat Nina with such respect, he was totally convinced. “Mr. Hayes, I underestimated Ms. Summer. She’s seriously a real deal.”
A faint, almost imperceptible smile tugged at Quentin’s lips. He kept his gaze fixed on Nina. “When I pick a vet, I never get it wrong.”
Nina gently stroked Silkcloud’s neck, then leaned in to whisper softly in his ear/”So, you can actually feel something tiny drifting through your veins with your blood, can’t you?”
Silkcloud nodded excitedly, nuzzling his big head into her palm. “You’re incredible. You didn’t even need those clunky, noisy machines. You pinpointed my pain right away.”
Nina quickly asked, “Do you remember when you first started feeling off? And was there anything else out of the ordinary that day?”
Silkcloud gave a thoughtful blink, searching his memory. “I think it started about two months ago. That day, the stable vet cleaned up a small lump at the base of my mane.”
Nina’s mind raced, and she asked urgently, “Did he use an extra fing, super light needle?”
Silkcloud’s ears perked up in shock, nostrils flaring. “That’s it. It was just like a mosquito bite. Doc, you even know that?”
He looked at Nina with admiration, his voice full of wonder. “How did you know? This is unbelievable.”
Nina gently stroked Silkcloud’s neck and gave a soft laugh. “I’m sure it’s that titanium micro-needle the vet used when removing a cyst near your mane’s roots. It must have snapped off and got lodged in your blood vessel.”
If it were a regular injection needle, it wouldn’t be able to travel through a horse’s veins at all, and regular scans would pick it up right away.

However, the titanium micro-needle used for mane treatments was a whole different story.
55 vouchers
It was made from a highly biocompatible titanium alloy, so thin and light that they could flow with the blood, making them. nearly invisible to standard scans.
Now the real question was whether the stable’s vet just made a mistake and left that needle inside Silkcloud, or it was intentional.
Once Silkcloud realized the tiny thing tormenting him was actually a needle, everything suddenly clicked.
He said, “No wonder it only starts poking me when I’m running, and my blood is pumping fast. Right now, it’s a little above my left foreleg, and it just keeps jabbing at me.”
Silkcloud nuzzled up to Nina like a sad little puppy. “Please help me.”
Nina, slim and petite, almost got knocked off her feet by Silkcloud’s massive head.
She thought all the Akhal-Tekes were cold and proud before this.
Nina patted Silkcloud’s head. “Don’t worry, I’ll get that needle out for you right away. That pesky little thing won’t be bothering you soon.”
Seeing how much Silkcloud trusted Nina, Karim was just about to speak up when Claire suddenly shouted, cutting him off. “Mr. Karim, we’ve made a major discovery.”
Everyone turned to look at her. Karim asked urgently, “What did you find?”
Claire burst with excitement. “Dr. Nichols just spotted something crucial in the ultrasound scan.”
Westin stepped forward with calm confidence, pointing at a fleeting linear shadow on the screen. “Based on the imaging, it looks like there’s an extremely tiny linear foreign body moving through Silkcloud’s blood vessels.”
He turned to the other experts. “It’s tough to spot, but this is very likely the root cause of Silkcloud’s symptoms.”
Westin’s analysis made everything click for the vets.
“Oh, I get it now. That totally makes sense.”
“Dr. Nichols is amazing. He caught a detail we all completely overlooked.”
“What a genius.”
Karim pressed. “Dr. Nichols, how do we get this foreign body out?”
Westin paused, his face serious. “This is a tough one.”
He suggested an extremely complicated vascular exploration surgery.
It would mean opening up a large section of Silkcloud’s blood vessels, maybe even putting her on bypass. Westin admitted
the odds of success were slim, the procedure would be brutal, and the risks were sky-high.
The other vets were all amazed by this bold and complicated plan.
“Dr. Nichols, this is such a creative approach.”
“Only Dr. Nichols would have the guts to take on a surgery this challenging.”
“He really is a genius; he is always thinking outside the box.”

Nina was absolutely dumbfounded.
She thought, ‘Are you kidding me? Are they really making such a big deal just to pull out one tiny needle?’
Claire rubbed her aching hips, watching Nina freeze in place, and finally felt a bit relieved.
