Nina looked up, and to her surprise, it was Quentin’s black horse, holding a victory wreath in its mouth. The horse gently set the garland on her head.
Nina gasped, her heart pounding with excitement and delight. She patted the horse’s head. “You did a great job.”
While Nina was still basking in her joy, Quentin walked over, leading a jet-black foal with white hooves. He handed her the reins with a gentle touch.
Nina’s eyes sparkled with surprise. “Where did this little cutie come from? Is this your horse’s kid or something?”
Before she could finish, the black horse beside her let out a loud, indignant snort. “I’m a male.”
“You can talk,” Nina exclaimed, her eyes going wide as she stared at the horse. “I’ve never heard you talk before. I thought you were just some mysterious silent creature.”
The black horse tossed his head elegantly, looking down at her with those deep eyes, clearly exasperated. “Honestly, I’d appreciate it if you could shut up.”
He didn’t like being called silent.
Quentin couldn’t help but chuckle at the playful banter between Nina and the horse. He gestured to the foal beside her. “This is the grand prize from the race, a purebred foal. She’s going to be something special when she grows up.”
He looked at Nina with gentle eyes. “It’s yours now. Thanks for carrying me to an easy win today.”
Nina stroked the foal’s soft coat, completely smitten, but then her face fell. “Wait, I can’t afford to keep her.”
She started to think about how much it would cost her. “Just building a proper stable would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
“And then there’s the feed, the grooming, and the vet bills. Oh my gosh, my zoo doesn’t even have a hint of a stable.”
Quentin saw the way her face scrunched up with worry and said in a reassuring tone, “Don’t stress. Everything you need will come in time.”
He paused, then said naturally, “Let me take care of the foal for you until your stable is ready.”
Nina immediately looked up, her eyes sharp and sly. “Is this free, or are you going to charge me?”
Quentin chuckled. “If you waive my rent at Forest Isle Zoo, I’ll let your foal stay at my stable for free.”
Nina thought, ‘Ah, figures. He’s always looking for a deal.’
She said, “Alright, but you’d better take good care of her.”
Quentin looked at the foal snuggled up to Nina and said softly, “Why don’t you give her a name?”
Nina studied the foal, then glanced up at the black horse beside them. “She looks just like your black horse. What’s your black horse’s name?”
Quentin stroked the black horse’s mane. “Glacier.”
“I’ve got it,” Nina exclaimed, pointing excitedly at the little moon-shaped white mark on the foal’s forehead. “Check out this unique mark. Let’s call her Moonchaser.”
The foal seemed to get it, nuzzling Nina’s palm sweetly. “Thanks for the name, Nina.”

Quentin’s eyes
twinkled with a smile. “Do you want to talk to Glacier, see if he’ll take care of Moonchaser at the stable?”
Nina got the hint instantly, her eyes sparkling as she pleaded with Glacier. “Can you look after Moonchaser for us?”
Moonchaser mimicked Nina, gazing up at Glacier with the same bright, hopeful eyes. “Hey, big guy, we’re friends now.”
With Moonchaser’s bright eyes staring at him, Glacier flicked his tail with elegant flair and, after a moment, gave a reluctant nod.
The setting sun cast long shadows of them and their horses, pulling them together into a warm, quiet silhouette on the ground.
Three days later, Nina’s phone chimed with a series of distinctive text alerts early in the morning.
When she checked it, she found a foreign-currency deposit alert from the bank; its format was nothing like the usual notifications.
It was from Eastland Bank. It said that her account ending in 5367 had received an international transfer from Karim in the amount of 5 million dollars.
Nina froze at the amount and held her breath, repeating it three times just to make sure.
It was 5 million dollars. Karim actually paid her.
Finally, the expansion and upgrade of Forest Isle Zoo was kicking off.
Nina jumped right into action, ready to give all the animals upgraded homes. She’d already locked in the designer and blueprints well in advance. Everything was ready, and all that was missing was the cash.
Now that the 5 million dollars had finally arrived, she couldn’t wait another second.
The morning before the big construction kicked off, Nina gave the blueprints one last careful look and saw a few details she still needed to confirm with the designer.
She picked up her phone and called the designer.
However, the call just rang and rang, and nobody answered. She tried a bunch more times, but all she got was that same endless busy tone.
Just as Nina was starting to get worried, her phone suddenly rang. It was Blanche, the designer, calling her back,
Blanche’s voice sounded rough and exhausted. “Ms. Summer, I’m really sorry. I’m stuck in Forestville right now. There’s no way I can make it back in time for the construction tomorrow.”
Blanche was close to Nina; she was the mastermind behind the last big zoo makeover.
She was super professional and totally dependable, not the type to ever flake out on a job,
Nina’s heart skipped a beat, and she blurted out, “Blanche, what’s going on?”
Blanche sounded strained and tired. “I’m in Forestville, doing a garden project for a rich family.
“Yesterday, just as I was about to finish up, my employer was suddenly poisoned and collapsed. He’s still in a coma. The police are investigating, and everyone who was there is being held for questioning.”
“What?!” Nina felt a wave of anxiety hit her. “Any idea how long this investigation might drag on?”
