Chapter 201 We Need Your Help

Chapter 201 We Need Your Help

Nina was still waiting for Gordon’s reply when, out of the blue, Ramon from the Forestville Detective Squad called her. “Ms. Summer, get over here now. We’ll pay for your trip.

“If you catch the killer, you’ll get the same reward as you did in Jelasburg. Please, hurry. We need you.”

Ramon, both excited and anxious, briefed Nina on the case and sent her the location of the crime scene.

Hearing that she would get a reward, Nina felt a mix of surprise and confusion. She’d never even worked with the Forestville police yet.

She thought, ‘Wait, do they actually want me to jump in on a case outside my city? And they’re begging me to come. This is insane.’

Nina followed up. “Mr. Warner, does the victim keep any pets?”

Ramon paused for a second, then said, “Mr. Winston has a cat. Uh, it’s an Amoxicillin Cat, I guess.”

Nina couldn’t help but laugh. “You mean an Abyssinian Cat, right?”

“Yeah,” Ramon replied quickly. “I know nothing about cats.”

Since the victim had a cat at home and this was a long-distance case, Nina decided to bring the Tabby King along for her first business trip as a detective.

After a two-hour drive, Nina finally arrived at Winston Manor, nestled beside Forestville Wetlands Park.

As soon as the car rounded the corner, she was stunned by what she saw.

Suddenly, it all made sense why the Forestville cops had sounded so desperate, over the phone.

>

Outside Winston Manor’s front gates, it was total chaos.

Reporters, armed with cameras and mics, were crammed together, their shutters clicking away.

All kinds of vehicles had the road jammed up, horns blaring, and shouting matches everywhere.

Several reporters were already live-streaming right outside the police tape.

“Breaking news. Real estate tycoon Kaysen Winston reportedly collapsed and fell into a coma yesterday. The word is, it might be poisoning. He’s still in critical condition.

“It’s said that Mr. Kaysen Winston and Mr. Casen Fletcher, the boss of Fletcher Foods, got into a fierce bidding war over a rare collectible at an auction. Afterwards, they had an argument at a café and stormed off after a fight.

“These two have been lifelong rivals in both business and romance, with decades of drama between them. Right now, rumors are flying everywhere, and a lot of people are suspecting Casen-”

The chaos outside was crazier than any superstar’s red carpet event.

Nina couldn’t help but gasp.

She knew that if the Forestville cops didn’t solve this soon, the media frenzy would be enough to bury everyone alive. Nina parked, pulled her cap down, put on her mask, and slung the backpack with Tabby King over her shoulder. She waited at the meeting point for someone from the Forestville police to escort her through a private entrance into Winston Manor.

Reporters were buzzing with juicy gossip and breaking news. Instead of getting annoyed, she was totally entertained; she even raised her brows in amusement.

She thought, ‘Man, this is way more dramatic than any prime-time TV show.’

She quickly pieced together the key facts from the reporters’ chatter.

The victim, Kaysen Winston, age 67, was the founder of the Winston Group, a powerhouse in luxury commercial real estate.

He owned numerous shopping malls and prime retail properties in the most coveted parts of major cities.

After retiring to enjoy a peaceful life at Winston Manor in Forestville, he never imagined he’d be hit by such an accident.

And the so-called “prime suspect”, Casen, had enough bad blood and drama with Kaysen.

They started out as ride-or-die brothers, building their fortunes from nothing. Later, Kaysen secretly developed feelings for the woman Casen was about to marry.

Kaysen swooped in and married her himself in the end.

That was the breaking point. From then on, the two became sworn enemies in business, locked in a cutthroat rivalry that

lasted half a lifetime.

Nina was so absorbed in the chaos that she didn’t realize someone had come up behind her until she felt a tap on her shoulder.

She spun around, instantly on guard.

Standing there was a man in his early thirties, who quickly flashed his police badge and spoke in a hushed tone. “Ms. Summer, right? I’m Ramon, the one who called you. Let’s go.”

Ramon’s voice was trembling with excitement, like he was clutching at a lifeline. “You’re finally here. Hurry, come with me.” Just as he finished speaking, a reporter suddenly shouted, “Look over there. That guy in the black jacket is Ramon from the Forestville Police Station.”

“Go.” Ramon’s face darkened instantly. He yanked his cap down, kept Nina close, and hustled her away.

The two of them darted down a hidden path behind the estate and slipped in through an inconspicuous door to Winston

Manor.

As they came out of the cramped passageway, Nina was greeted by a breathtaking view.

The interior of Winston Manor revealed a surprisingly elegant outdoor space. There was a private garden with trimmed lawns, stone walkways, and a quiet stretch of running water that made the place feel almost unreal.

However, this elegant setting was suddenly thrown into chaos by a loud, explosive argument.

Kaysen’s kids, each backed up by their own lawyer, were going at each other’s throats over the will.

There had to be at least a dozen lawyers in suits, waving their briefcases around. The place was crowded and noisy.

Nina didn’t bother with the family feud and got right to business. “Do we know what poison was used?”

Ramon rubbed his aching forehead, looking exhausted. “Honestly, it’s a real headache right now.

“Mr. Winston’s symptoms definitely look like poisoning, but vomiting and coma could just as easily be a heart attack.”

He dropped his voice. “The doctors haven’t given us a clear answer, so we’re chasing both angles: poisoning and sudden illness.

“We’ve already checked everyone who’s been close to Mr. Winston and gone through his daily meals, but we haven’t found anything out of the ordinary.”

He lowered his voice, his tone turning serious. “His family, especially the kids, just want us to call it a stroke and wrap things up fast, which only makes us more suspicious.”

Nina instantly picked up on what he was really saying.

Kaysen had already been frail for years, and now he was in the ICU with doctors unsure if he would make it through.

His kids were pressuring the police to wrap things up fast, so they could snatch up their share of the inheritance without delay.

Nina caught on right away. “Mr. Winston is still in the ICU, right? Then who was the first to call the police?”

Ramon looked genuinely impressed. “It was the Winston family’s butler, Roland. He’s been working here for nearly thirty years.”

Ramon dropped his voice. “He helped a lot. He was right there when Kaysen collapsed. He saw him start convulsing, then vomiting, and finally lose consciousness.

“Roland insisted that it wasn’t a stroke. He said his own father died of one, and he said the symptoms were nothing alike. That was why he wouldn’t take no for an answer and called us right away.”

Nina confirmed, “Mr. Warner, as long as we figure out the truth, Blanche will be free to return to Jelasburg, right?” Ramon nodded. “That’s right.”

“Oh, and one more thing.” Nina’s eyes lit up as she recalled, “You said Mr. Winston had an Abyssinian Cat. Where is the cat now?”
