Chapter 208 Tabby King Runs Away

Chapter 208 Tabby King Runs Away

Roland, the butler at Winston Manor, had become even more respectful toward Nina lately.

After Nina asked if she could bring Amber to visit Kaysen, Roland wasted no time and quickly arranged a car for her, along with a couple of attendants to look after the two cats.

On the way to the hospital, Roland said to Nina, “Kaysen has just woken up, but he is really eager to meet you. You helped so much, and thank you in person.”

Nina quickly asked, “I’m just not sure if Kaysen is up for any more surprises right now.

“I’ve got something really important to tell him. It’s about the ownership of his company.”

Roland paused for a moment, then said, “Don’t worry. Kaysen’s got nerves of steel. He has been in business for over forty years and has weathered every imaginable storm.

“Even after finding out it was his third son who poisoned him, he still came through just fine.”

Nina thought, ‘That’s true.

I

‘If he could survive his own son poisoning him, then whatever news I have about Tabby King is probably nothing to Kaysen, Nina thought.

As they were talking, the car pulled up to the hospital entrance.

Nina glanced out the window and saw a towering white building with “Goodwin Hospital” written in huge letters. She was momentarily stunned.

“It’s Goodwin Hospital?” she blurted out.

She quickly remembered that Quentin owned hospitals all over the country and even had medical centers abroad.

It wasn’t surprising that there was a branch in Forestville.

Roland kept nodding, his eyes filled with genuine gratitude and respect. He said, “Goodwin Hospital really is one of the world’s top private hospitals. It totally deserves its reputation.

“When Kaysen was poisoned this time, it triggered all his old ailments again. Things got really serious.

“We reached out to several top experts who had treated Kaysen before, but honestly, they didn’t hold out much hope,” Roland went on, sounding grim.

“But Goodwin Hospital still took on this tough case,” Roland added, sounding a bit relieved.

Roland said, sounding genuinely relieved. “It was the Hayes family’s top specialists who personally took charge, leading both the medical and surgical teams to come up with a rescue plan.

“They actually managed to pull Kaysen back from the jaws of death.

“In a crisis that intense, only Mr. Hayes could have pulled off a miracle and turned things around.” Roland let out a heartfelt sigh.

Nina raised an eyebrow in surprise. ‘Mr. Hayes? Did Quentin come to Forestville? Or is it another relative from the Hayes family?’ Nina thought.

Once the car rolled to a stop, Nina and Roland stepped out together. The cats tucked into their carriers, and they all took the elevator upstairs together.

Inside the VIP hospital room, an elderly man lay propped up in bed, an IV still hooked to the back of his hand. It was Kaysen, just back from the edge of death.

Kaysen was sixty-seven, though his hair was already pure white.

Roland stepped forward quietly and helped Kaysen sit up carefully. “Kaysen, the detective who cracked the case for us, is here to see you, and she’s brought Amber along.”

Kaysen looked at Nina, his voice soft but full of sincerity. “Ms. Summer, we owe it all to you this time.”

Nina grinned as she popped open the carrier. “Amber did all the hard work, and I was just the interpreter here!”

Amber slipped out of the carrier and hopped lightly onto Kaysen’s lap, Amber’s little paws kneading Kaysen’s legs over and over, as if double-checking his human was really back.

Amber thought, ‘You’re still here, Master! Yay, t

Amber lifted its tiny face, and his big cat eyes were already welling up with tears.

Kaysen, still weak, managed to gently stroke Amber’s fur with one hand and couldn’t help but sigh, “I just came back from the brink of death, and not a single one of my children showed up.

“The only one keeping me company in this hospital room is a cat I’ve had for less than two years,” he said.

Nina nudged Tabby King’s tail with a smile. “It’s okay, cats are family, too!”

Tabby King huffed, but his tail betrayed him, curling around Nina’s wrist all on its own.

“You’re absolutely right!” Kaysen nodded with heartfelt agreement. “Amber is the one who has been by my side day in and day out.”

Nina paused, then spoke up, “Kaysen, I’ll be straight with you. I came here today because I have some important news to tell you.

“You’d better get ready for this,” she added.

Nina’s face switched to her serious business look.

Kaysen straightened up, his expression growing solemn as he gave a slight nod. “Go ahead. I’m ready for anything now.” Nina laid it all out, telling Kaysen exactly what the other three children had been up to.

With every revelation, Kaysen’s expression soured.

When Nina finished, he let out a cold snort. “I knew those three were trouble!”

Roland was so furious, and his chest was heaving. “Kaysen, you’ve always treated those kids well!

“Not only do they not appreciate it, but they even stab you in the back!” he added.

Kaysen waved his hand, sounding weary. “Enough. After all this, I finally got it.”

“The only ones who’ve truly stuck by me are Roland and Amber,” he said, a hint of sadness in his voice.

He turned to Roland and instructed, “Take care of this for me. I’m worn out.”

Roland bowed respectfully. “Yes, Kaysen. Don’t worry, I’ll get right on it.”

“Oh, and one more thing,” Kaysen added.

He shot Roland a meaningful look.

Roland nodded, understanding.

Roland picked up a document from the nightstand and handed it to Nina with both hands.

“What’s this?” Nina asked.

Nina flipped through the papers and saw they were about transferring some storefronts to her name.

Kaysen was too weak to say much more.

Roland stepped in to explain, “Ms. Summer, Winston Realty has plenty of prime retail spaces in the hottest business districts all over the country.

“I’ll send you a list of all the locations later.

“Just pick whichever ones you like. Kaysen wants you to have them.”

Nina almost thought that she was dreaming. “Wait, are you seriously giving me all those stores?”

Kaysen nodded. “Yes. Every single shop I own, over a hundred of them, are yours.”

He sighed, looking a little troubled. “I know this gift might seem a bit much, but I hope you won’t mind.”

Kaysen’s voice was gentle, but his words hit Nina like a ton of gold bricks, heavy and unreal.

Nina thought, ‘Over a hundred prime shops in top city districts, all just handed to me?

‘And he calls this not enough? Seriously?’ Nina thought.

She could barely catch her breath.

Nina thought, ‘Even with the most conservative estimate, a regular street-level shop in a non-prime area of a major city could bring in more than 3,000 dollars in rent every month.

‘But if it were a top spot right in the city center, the monthly rent could easily hit over 30,000 dollars and even more.

‘With over a hundred shops, even if I only rented out half, the monthly rental income would be more than 300,000 dollars.

‘That alone would bring in more than three million dollars a year!’

Nina stared at Kaysen in shock, as if she needed to double-check that this was actually happening.

There was both sadness and relief in Kaysen’s eyes. “Thank you for showing me who my four children truly are, after all the effort I put into raising them.”

Seeing Nina’s stunned look, he gave a helpless smile. “Most of my prime properties were already snatched away by those ungrateful brats.

“I’ve only got a little over a hundred shops left, and with brick-and-mortar business struggling these days, they’re not so easy to rent out anymore.

“I’m getting old, and I just don’t have the energy to manage these anymore. I’m handing them over for you to run as you see fit.

“Do whatever you want with them, run your own business, rent them out, whatever,” Kaysen said.

But then his tone turned serious. “But that shop at Radiant Plaza in Juniper is the crown jewel of my portfolio. Promise me you’ll keep it safe.

“My ungrateful kids are all eyeing that last prime asset I’ve got,” he added.

‘Radiant Plaza in Juniper?’ Nina supervised.

Of course, she had heard of it. That place was prime real estate, worth it’s weight in gold!

Kaysen said, “Take them, but there’s one condition.

“If anything ever happens to me, promise you’ll look after Amber for me.” He stroked Amber’s head and let out a sigh.

Nina didn’t hesitate for a second. “Kaysen, after making it through this, you’ll live to a hundred for sure.”

“Ms. Summer, thank you,” Kaysen said.

“If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to reach out,” he added, his tone serious.

Noticing how tired Kaysen looked, Nina knew it was time to go. She scooped up Tabby King and grinned, “Alright, I’ll take you up on that! Wishing you a speedy recovery.”

Just as Nina was about to leave, Amber clung to her pant leg, then scampered off and returned with her favorite gemstone collar in her mouth.

Amber said, “Nina, I’m just a cat, and I don’t have any money. But this is my absolute favorite collar. I want you to have it!

“Thank you so much for saving my human!” Amber thought.

Nina gazed into Amber’s sparkling eyes, feeling her heart melt. She tucked the collar away with care. “Amber, Tabby King, and I will definitely come back to visit you and play!”

In the hallway outside the hospital room, Roland was flipping through his contacts, about to make a call, but when he saw Nina step out, he hurried over. “Ms. Summer, let me see you out.”

Nina noticed how busy he was and shook her head. “No need, Roland. I know the way. You go ahead and keep doing what you’re doing.”

Nina opened up the cat carrier and set it on the floor, ready to get Tabby King inside.

But right then, Tabby King sniffed the air, suddenly whipped its head around, and fixed its gaze in the opposite direction.

In the next instant, Tabby King became a streak of tabby lightning, darting straight down the other end of the hallway.

“What?” Nina exclaimed.

She panicked, snatched up the carrier, and bolted after Tabby King. “Hey, you little rascal, slow down! This isn’t a zoo, you know!

“This isn’t our place, don’t go wandering off!” she called out.
