Chapter 233
Claire walked away, holding back her frustration.

Nina didn’t want to stay at the Summer Tower any longer, so she headed to the Jelasburg Police Department Headquarters.
This time, she was going to sign a contract for a promotion and a raise.
On the way, she got a text from the bank. Her first consulting fee payment of 1 million had just hit her
account.
Nina couldn’t help humming a happy tune on her way.
The driver, seeing her in such a good mood, smiled and struck up a conversation. “Ms. Summer, you seem really happy today.”
Normally, when he drove for Quentin, he was always on edge and barely dared to say a word. But now, with the easygoing and cheerful Nina, he felt a lot more relaxed.
Nina nodded eagerly. “Totally! Just thinking about who I’m going to see and what’s about to happen has me super excited.”
She had heard Alex had been suspended. Today, he was scheduled to complete the paperwork to terminate the partnership.
And her animal friends were about to be formally registered as staff members and put on the government’s payroll.
Nina’s face lit up with a big smile. “Hey, could you play ‘Good Day’ for me?”
“Of course,” the driver replied. Then the Maybach’s built-in sound system immediately began playing the song, filling the car with a cheerful atmosphere.
As soon as Nina hopped out of the car, she spotted her exclusive Animal Detective Van parked in front of the Jelasburg Police Department.
Simon stood in a neat police uniform, looking as serious as if he were directing a major traffic operation. In reality, he was just corralling her Animal Detective Squad and getting them to line up and climb out of the
van.
Tabby King took the lead as squad captain, while the Squirrel Bros were busy shoving each other around with their fluffy tails. Pearlie zipped up Simon’s arm and made itself comfortable on his shoulder.
Crow was busy trying to wake Chunky up.
The detective van had been driven over by Liam, one of the staff from Forest Isle Zoo.
When Liam looked up and saw Quentin’s Maybach pull up, he nearly jumped out of his skin and straightened

But when he realized it was Nina stepping out of the car, he visibly relaxed and let out a sigh of relief, patting
his chest.
Meanwhile, Simon, who was bent over calming the animals, also spotted Nina getting out of the luxury car.
The warmth drained from his face. His smile faded, and he cast a wary glance at the Maybach and then at Nina.
The driver who had brought Nina stuck his head out the window and asked, “Ms. Summer, I’ll get the car serviced. Just call me when you need a ride.”
Nina was about to say she had a car, but then she remembered she had a follow-up appointment at Hayes Hospital later. It would be a hassle to bring her animal detectives along, so she decided to let Liam take them home.
“Okay, thanks,” she said with a smile, nodding at the driver.
The arrival of Nina’s Animal Detective Squad instantly turned the usually stiff atmosphere at the Jelasburg Police Department Headquarters into a lively circus.
Grant and Gordon were both waiting at the entrance to welcome them.
The spectacle drew passing officers, who couldn’t help stopping to stare.
Nina led her chattering, fluffy crew, marching toward the registration room.
She was ready to get them set up with their official assistant records at the police department.
But the vibe inside the registration room was totally different from the lively scene outside.
Alex stood at the counter, looking worn out, with a cardboard box at his feet packed with the personal stuff he had just cleared out of his office.
The officer in charge of registration slid a stack of forms across the counter and said, “Mr. Alex Summer, these are the documents for terminating your contract. Please fill them out.”
Alex kept his head down, silently filling out the forms that marked the end of his career as a special consultant.
Suddenly, a cheer went up at the door.
He looked up instinctively and met Nina’s clear-eyed gaze. Then he took in the impressive Animal Detective Squad behind her.
Nina strode in with her crew to get them registered. The moment she spotted Alex and that box of personal stuff at his feet, she realized that he had been formally shown the door after the investigation.
The registration room was as lively as a kindergarten on the first day of school.
The officer with the camera spoke softly to the Squirrel Bros, “Hey, dears, look at the camera and give me a big smile. Time to make your official records.”

Coco instantly showed off his trademark buck teeth.

Chubby, the little foodie, hurried to join in. But there was still a bit of nut stuck to his front tooth, which made the officers around him crack up.
Meanwhile, another officer was carefully placing Pearlie on the scale.
Her fingers sank into Pearlie’s fluffy, soft fur, and she laughed. “This is like squishing a wiggling marshmallow.”
The whole registration room was filled with laughter, a stark contrast to Alex, who sat off to the side, filling out his resignation paperwork alone.
The registration room was small, and Nina’s desk was just beside Alex’s.
Alex, who used to be the top crime-solving expert, now sported a scruffy beard and looked totally beaten down.
He listened to the laughter around him, shot Nina a cold glare, and rasped out in a hoarse voice. “Nina, does seeing me lose my title and end up like this make you feel good?”
Nina didn’t even bother to lift her eyelids. “You seriously overestimate your importance. Whatever happens to you doesn’t even cause a ripple in my heart.
“I never waste my energy on people who don’t matter at all.”
Alex stared at her cold face, his chest tightening painfully.
Nina used to smile at him sweetly and call his name amiably. Now Alex couldn’t help wondering how they would come to this.
“I just remembered something,” Nina said, turning to Alex. “You once looked down on Simon and me and said, ‘Poor kids like you are born poor and will never be anything else.”
She asked, “Do you remember that?”
Before Alex could respond, Nina chuckled, her gaze drifting over the box at his feet and his worn-out face. She said unhurriedly, “I’ve realized something new.
“They’re sitting in a gilded house that isn’t theirs, putting on airs. Once they’re kicked out, the mask slips, and everyone sees who they really are. Don’t you think?”
Alex shot upright as if someone had stepped on his last nerve, his voice rising with agitation. “I’m not even going to talk about the arson right now. But my dad would never hire a hitman!”
As he argued, he caught a glimpse of Gordon beaming as he personally presented the animals with specially made Police Consultant badges, his manner warm yet ceremonial.
The police in charge of his exit paperwork, seeing he was distracted, tapped the desk and reminded him coolly, “Mr. Alex Summer, let’s keep it moving. All your police IDs and access cards need to be turned in now.”
