Chapter 234
ค
Alex fished out his special consultant badge, reluctantly placing it back on the officer’s desk.
At that moment, all traces of his previous embarrassment faded away, leaving him standing in the cruelest contrast to Nina and her animal companions, who were basking in the glory of being celebrated and honored.
At that moment, Gordon solemnly presented a bouquet each to Nina and Simon.
Turning to Simon, Gordon announced in a booming voice, “Simon, for your repeated success in solving major cases and for capturing two top-level fugitives back to back, your achievements are truly outstanding.
“After careful consideration, the department has decided to promote you to Deputy Captain of the Detective Squad.”
As soon as those words left Gordon’s mouth, the crowd couldn’t help but gasp in shock.
Usually, one had to slog through years of hard work and be well into one’s thirties before even dreaming of becoming a Deputy Captain in the Detective Squad.
But Simon snagged the title at just twenty-six. It broke all the rules.
Next, Gordon presented a freshly printed contract to Nina with both hands, his smile warm but his tone serious. “Nina, this is our special consultant contract from the police department.
“From now on, we’ll be addressing you as Professor Summer. Please sign here.”
The title exploded in Alex’s ears; it was like his whole world had just flipped upside down.
He wanted to run away from this place that made him feel so small, but his feet were stuck to the floor.
All Alex could do was stand there and watch as Nina, cool as ever, picked up the pen and signed her name on the contract that was basically her ticket to the top.
Nina was on the rise, basking in glory; Alex was falling from grace, quietly stepping away into the shadows.
In that instant, their destinies collided and then split apart, each heading toward a future that couldn’t be more different.
Nina’s eyes lit up as she checked out the special consultant contract.
Her base salary shot up to 6 thousand a month, plus she’d get expert-level retirement perks.
But the best part, she now had way more pull than when she was just the animal communicator.
She could mobilize officers from both the Jelasburg Police Department Headquarters and local branches, and even reach out directly to the higher authorities if she wanted.
She signed her name in a flash, and Simon snapped to attention with a salute. “Congratulations, Professor Summer. From now on, I’m at your disposal.”

Nina gave him a playful wink. “Then my first order is here. This week, you’re buying barbecue for everyone, Simon.”
Simon couldn’t help but laugh, “Your wish is my command, Professor Summer.”
Gordon looked at the siblings with a proud, happy smile. “Nina, the Official Animal Staff Program just got the green light.
“The government’s covering all the costs for our critter detectives, and the vet team will be based at the zoo full-time. Everyone’s paycheck is on the state now.”
“Awesome,” Nina and the critters cheered together, while the Squirrel Bros happily spun their big tails like little windmills.
Right after that, Grant came over with a whole pile of custom gear, grinning as he showed it off. “These are the special police gadgets we got just for our little detectives.”
Inside were mini communicators made just for animals, lightweight collars with built-in GPS and emergency SOS buttons; they’d thought of everything.
Nina’s heart was bursting with joy as she took it all in, and she couldn’t help but cheer inwardly, ‘Man, having Big Daddy Government watching over me is the best feeling ever.’
Just then, Gordon’s face grew serious, and his voice dropped. “With upgraded gear and new titles, the weight on your shoulders just got heavier.
“From now on, the missions coming your way will be riskier, and you’ll have way more power to get things done.
“So get ready. You could be dealing with cases that cross regional borders, or even huge investigations that make headlines nationwide.”
Nina and Simon exchanged a look, then straightened up together. With the critters in her arms, they all called out together, “Absolutely. We promise to get the job done and live up to the trust the country’s placed in us.”
Once everything was signed and sealed, Nina walked out of the station with Simon and her crew of critters.
Watching Simon’s tall, athletic figure striding ahead, and remembering what Gordon had said, Nina couldn’t help but ask, “Simon, Gordon said we might have to take on more dangerous missions from now on, but honestly, my stamina just isn’t up to par.
“I want to learn some self-defense, kickboxing, or grappling, whatever works.”
“If you teach me, I’ll totally slack off. But if it’s a stranger, honestly, I’m kind of nervous,” Nina admitted. “Do you know any reliable coaches or gyms you could recommend?”
Simon raised an eyebrow, a little surprised. “You really want to learn?”
“Yes.” Nina patted her arm. “I mean, I know this little body isn’t gonna knock anyone out, but I just wanna learn a couple of useful tricks.

“Just enough to hold off an attacker for a moment and make a run for it if I have to.”
“Actually, that’s perfect timing,” Simon said, his eyes drifting off to the side as he subconsciously rubbed his
nose.

“Captain Cole put me onto Officer Emerson from the higher authorities. He’s three years older than you, and he’s got coach-level skills in grappling.”
Simon could slip into any disguise during missions, but when it came to keeping secrets from Nina, he always felt awkward.
He spoke a little stiffly, “Officer Emerson’s dad owns a training center.” If you’re interested, you could set up a visit with Officer Emerson this afternoon and check out the place.”
As they chatted, they strolled up to the front steps of the police station with the critters tagging along.
Liam was chilling by the car door, waiting to drive the critters back to the zoo. But as soon as he overheard their conversation, his ears shot up.
‘Wait, Officer Emerson? Who the heck is that?’ Liam thought to himself. ‘The higher authorities? Three years older? Hold up, they’re going somewhere together? With Ms. Summer?’
Liam was suddenly on high alert, like he was gearing up for battle.
Simon turned to Nina. “I’ll shoot you Officer Emerson’s WhatsApp. He said he can swing by and pick you up
soon.”
He was honestly reluctant, but when he glanced up and saw Quentin’s flashy Maybach still parked out front, he gritted his teeth and sent over the contact anyway.
Nina was taken aback by how decisively Simon handled things. “Whoa, seriously? That fast?”
