During the ride to Dean’s place in the limousine, I sat right next to Maddox while Dean sat on the other side.
Some music played quietly to fill in the silence, but it was still awkward as the two of them glanced at each other, but neither of them spoke first. The unspoken tension was still there. Dean must have expected an apology and Maddox didn’t want to do it just yet.
It was up to me to lighten the mood, so I was the first to speak.
“How long until we get home?” I asked Dean.
His facial expression softened when he looked at me. “We have about ten more minutes to go.”
“And we’ve been moving for the past thirty minutes,” Maddox chimed in, looking at me instead of Dean who had said it.
“It’ll still be worth it,” Dean forced a smile as he responded to Maddox. Then, he changed the subject while still looking at him. “I’m surprised you actually had time to come all the way to Sydney after that messy and public divorce.”
I reached for Maddox’s hand quickly and gently squeezed, just in case he was about to say something offensive. He didn’t glance at me, but gently squeezed back, like it was an assurance to say he had it all under control.
“For Harper, I’ll always have time no matter what’s going on in my life,” Maddox responded with so much pride.
Dean nodded with understanding. “Good.”
“Good,” Maddox flatly replied.
After that extremely short exchange, the silence was back. I tried a few more times to engage both of them in conversation, but in the end, I told myself to just give it up. It wasn’t going to work. Not yet.
“We’re almost home,” Dean finally said after a while with a smile as he looked at me. “You’re going to love my home. It’s beautiful. It’s actually my favorite estate out of all the other ones. I’m currently staying with…
someone.”
I wouldn’t have thought too much of it, but when he trailed off, he was looking right at Maddox, like it involved him somehow.
I glanced over at Maddox, whose forehead creased slightly as he wondered the same thing, but he didn’t
comment on it.
“Harper, I hope you plan to stay the weekend.”
I had to press my lips together so my jaw wouldn’t drop. The need to call out my name just to make it clear that he was only talking to me was quite unexpected.

Maddox didn’t seem offended by it and even cracked a small smile as he understood what Dean had just
done.
“Babe, if you plan to stay the weekend, that’s great,” he said as he glanced at me. “It’ll give me time to check out some of my estates here because I haven’t done that in a while.”
“I hope you don’t plan to stay at one of those estates,” Dean chimed in quickly, his tone now neutral. “You’re welcome, too, you know. That’s why I’ve specifically prepared a room for the two of you.”
“Oh…” Maddox’s eyes widened a little with fake surprise. “How kind of you.”
“You’re welcome.” Dean raised the corner of his mouth at him and I couldn’t tell if that was supposed to be a smile or not.
Right after that, the limousine drove off the main road and into a quiet and luxurious looking neighbourhood with towering buildings which were supposed to be houses.
“Horizon Hillside Estates,” Maddox said out loud as he looked out his window. “Nice.”
“Thanks,” Dean replied, his tone still neutral.
Every house we drove by seemed to be bigger than the previous one and I lost count of how many I liked.
We stopped at a large black gate and after we drove in, I had never seen anything like that. It really was beautiful, from the trees to the design of the pavement. The lighting was so creative that it made everything a lot more pleasing to the eye.
And then came the house itself. I couldn’t stop smiling even before we stepped out of the limousine.
“Welcome to my home,” Dean said with pride.
He was the first to step out, followed by Maddox and I.
We weren’t surrounded by security anymore as Dean had given them instructions to stay behind.
As he led the way, he was ahead of us by a few steps and Maddox used that opportunity to whisper in my ear after leaning over.
“Back in the limo, he bragged about how beautiful his home is, but now that we’re here. I’m disappointed. I expected more.”
I covered my mouth so I wouldn’t chuckle out loud. “You’re just mad.”
He shrugged, then kept looking around with disapproval.
I wondered if he was still going to say that after the two of them would speak about the pending issue.
While the exterior of Dean’s home was more beautiful than I imagined it, the interior was unmatched and I had never seen such modern fittings, not even in Maddox’s home.
I kept glancing at him to catch his reaction, but he only had a blank expression, like it still made no difference

to him. I found that amusing.

We had only been in the foyer and now headed towards the living room, but that was still enough for me to
comment.
“It’s so beautiful in here, right babe?”
“Yup.” He didn’t seem to agree with me but responded that way anyway.
Dean must have picked up on it as I caught his smile fade just slightly when his eyes landed on Maddox, but he didn’t seem to care.
“This place is so huge. Who do you live with again?” I asked when we finally made it to the living room.
“You’ll meet them soon. They’re just taking a bath. Anything to drink?”
Maddox and I lightly shook our heads, but I was the only one to speak afterwards.
