I held my breath, hoping to hear a specific answer from Dean.
“No, he’s not the one I live with.”

My shoulders slumped slightly with disappointment and his next words only made me feel worse.
“But he was here right before I left to pick you up from the airport.”
“Will he be back?”
“No. He traveled to Spain.”
“Did he know that I was coming here?”
“Do you really want the truth?”
“Yes. He knew.”
“I see.” My voice cracked as I faced the floor, feeling my own heart break a little.
Maddox wrapped his arm around me for comfort and he whispered to me to take it easy. I didn’t know how much I needed him in Sydney until that moment because as soon as he told me that, I took a few deep breaths to compose myself, then smiled through the pain in my heart to keep the conversation going.
“If he’s not the one you live with,” I began, my voice now steady, “then who is it?”
“You wouldn’t know this person even if I told you. I actually can’t wait to introduce you to everyone. There’s my mom, Uncle-”
“Whoa, not so fast.” I gestured with the palm of my hand. “I don’t think we’ve gotten to that part yet.”
Maddox nodded in agreement. I knew he wanted to add to the conversation, but he chose to be silent for my sake and let me take the lead as that conversation was all about me.
“You can tell me about all those people after we have that DNA test,” I said to him.
“Right, sorry about that. I’m just so thrilled that you’re here. I already know in my heart that you’re my sister and your aunt confirmed it. But I can understand why you would still want that DNA test. Still, there’s no harm in telling you about a few notable family members.”
“And this is the part where I feel like taking a tour of the house,” Maddox finally chimed in as he got up.
“Good,” Dean’s tone made it seem like he was glad he was leaving.
But Maddox paid little attention to that as he looked down at me. “Call me if you need me.”

As he started walking away, Dean’s eyes never left his sight. “Don’t get lost. This place is like a maze.”
“It’s not much of a maze, but thanks for the advice.” Maddox dismissively waved his hand as he walked away.
Even after Maddox turned at the corner, Dean kept looking in that direction. It was only when I said something that he looked back at me.
“He’s a good guy, you know,” I said.
He didn’t seem to agree with me as he lightly shook his head. “I’m surprised that you two are still going strong. I get it. He’s going through some shit but now, he’s about to be more arrogant than ever. Don’t tell me you didn’t see his attitude ever since you two got off that jet. How could he not be arrogant now that he’s worth at least nine hundred billion dollars?”
I gave him a warm smile. “Before we leave this place, you two will talk things out and I’m hoping that afterwards, everything’s going to be alright.”
He scoffed again, getting up to sit next to me. “He’s the one with a problem. It’s definitely not me and you know this. Anyway, enough about him. We need to talk about something that actually matters to both of us.”
I caught the subtle jab at Maddox, but chose not to comment on it because it wasn’t going to make any difference.
“I’m actually glad he’s gone because there’s so much more you need to know. I know you wanted him here, but come on. This is a family issue. It’s enough that he came with you to Sydney. So, we can go to my private hospital tomorrow morning for that DNA test. We should have the results after twenty four hours. I’ll be honest, I still don’t know why you need that when you know who you are to me.”
“I just feel the need to have it.”
“Do you regret coming here?”
“What? Why would you ask me that?”
“I told you that dad was here and he left despite knowing that you were on your way.”
I smiled painfully. “It doesn’t matter. I came here to see you.”
“When the time is right, you two will get to meet. I think he’s scared to face you. He’s not ready, but everyone else is. That includes Hank Beauregard, dad’s younger brother and Rachel Beauregard. She’s the youngest among the three of them. Uncle Hank has two children and Aunt Rachel has three. Since I was born after you, that makes you my older sister.”
I grinned. “I always had Anna as my older sister. I never thought someone would ever call me that.”
“Does she know you’re here?”
“No, she doesn’t. I never really told you about her. It’s complicated.”
I thought about how it was always so painful for me to talk about Anna, but ever since I’d received that memory card from Kate, everything felt much easier to handle when it came to my sister. I got lost in

thought right at that moment, and it was only when Dean spoke that I paid attention again.
“Here’s an important fact. Among all of us, you were born first.”
“And yet I’m very late to the party.” I didn’t even mean it jokingly.

Dean must have felt bad commenting on that because he immediately changed the topic to lighten the mood. “Anything big planned for your birthday next weekend?”
I raised my eyebrows in pleasant surprise. “How did you know that it’s my birthday next weekend? I don’t think I ever said that.”
“Dad mentioned it before he left.”
That alone brought just a little bit of warmth in my heart.
“So he still remembers,” I said quietly. “What exactly did he say?”
He was just about to tell me when he paused at the sound of movement along the stairs from the foyer, making him smile proudly.
“I told you that I’m currently staying with someone and you’re about to meet her.”
The fact that it was a girl already set off an idea of who she might have been to him and it made me eager to see her.
When she walked into the living room, she gasped. “Harper! You’re so much prettier in person!”
I smiled awkwardly as I didn’t know how to react. “Uh…thanks.”
“No need to be so dramatic, Tracy,” Dean chimed in, rising to his feet and approaching her.
He stopped right beside her, threw his arm over her shoulder and before he could even speak, I figured it out.
“So this is who you’re staying with,” I said. “I’m glad I got to meet your girlfriend on my first day here.”
“Eww! Gross!” Tracy pushed Dean away. “Not even in the next life can this jerk right here be my boyfriend.”
“That makes the two of us!” He seemed just as disgusted.
My head tilted with curiosity. “If she’s not your girlfriend, then who is she?”
“Harper, meet Tracy-”
She scoffed at him. “You already told her my name.”
