It was 6 AM when I rushed down the stairs, shirtless, and in nothing but a brand new pair of shorts and sneakers that Dean had given to me the previous night.
He was already outside, waiting for me. I approached the water fountain, where he was stretching like he was ready.
“I didn’t think you’d actually show up,” he said, straightening up when he saw me.
I smirked, rolling my shoulders. “I actually thought I’d be the only one out here.”
He chuckled, clearly amused. “Come on.”
We took off without another word and headed towards the grounds, which were massive. There were wide paths and turns that kept coming. It was just perfect for what was about to happen,
We matched paces, then overtook each other and repeated that just to prove a point. Neither of us said a word, but it was clear that neither of us planned on losing.
After a while, we naturally slowed down, our breaths heavy.
I let the silence carry on for a while, but that was still the perfect moment for me to talk to him.
“You knew about Tracy and me,” I said, my voice trembling as I was still in motion.
He didn’t even look at me. “I did.”
I let out a sharp breath, still looking ahead. “Why didn’t you say anything to Harper?”
He shrugged. “It wasn’t my place.”
I scoffed. “But you had fun watching my shocked face when I saw Trina at the house for the first time.”
That finally made him chuckle. “It was very entertaining. She really liked you.”
“I made things clear to her from the start. It meant nothing to me.”
“When she came back heartbroken, I was ready to get back at you, but I changed my mind later.”
I glanced at him. “Why?”
“Because you’re not just anybody. You’re an Aldridge.”
My lips curved into a proud smile. “You’re right about that. But hey, you’re a Beauregard.”
He proudly nodded. “So, when are you going to tell Harper?”

“I already did.”
That made him stop in his tracks. “You did?”
I stopped as well and sat on the ground. “Yes, I told her last night before we went to bed.”
“Before you went to bed,” he repeated slowly as he sat down next to me. “And?”

“She was mad and shocked at first,” I admitted as I remembered that moment. “But it put her at ease after a few minutes because she finally figured out why Trina was being so overly nice to her.”
He exhaled loudly, clearly surprised. “Given your history with the ladies, I wouldn’t have taken you for an honest guy.”
“That’s what kind of relationship I have with my girl. She tells me everything. Why wouldn’t I do the same?”
He thoughtfully lowered his head.
I wanted to let him be, but I had to let him know.
“There’s one more thing we need to talk about, but it can wait.”
“After the run?” he asked.
Getting off the ground, I said, “After I beat you.”
As he got up, he shook his head like I was bluffing.
“Enough playing games,” he said, stretching his neck a few times as he began to set a timer on his watch. “Five minutes straight and no rest.”
“You’re on.” I smirked, setting a timer on mine as well.
And with that, we took off running. The next five minutes were brutal. We traded the lead again and again, breathing hard as we both tried to keep up with each other.
By the time we got to the fourth minute, I could hear him breathing like his lungs were burning, yet he refused to slow down. It wasn’t as hard for me as I usually ran for miles.
When there were 20 seconds left, I pushed harder than ever since the beginning of that run and I was in the lead.
I even crossed my own imaginary finish line just as the timer beeped.
10 seconds later, Dean stumbled past me, then placed his hands on his knees as his chest rose and fell with rapid breaths.
He straightened up slowly, sweat running down the sides of his head. Then, he flashed me a smile.
“Good run,” he said. “You got me.”

I had achieved so much in the corporate world, but that moment made me feel like I was on top of the world. I’d been holding in what I wanted to say for a while and it was then that I decided to finally say it.
“I’m sorry.”
He turned his head slightly towards me. “What?”
I sat up just to say it again and this time, louder. “I’m sorry about what I did to you that evening. I didn’t know what you’d discussed with Harper and I misunderstood the situation. That was wrong of me.”
He just stared at me for a few seconds, like the words had caught him off guard.
Then, his expression softened as he grinned. “I have to admit that I never saw this coming. Maddox Aldridge apologizing to me? Maybe that’s why it means so much to me hearing you say it.” He held out his hand. “There are no hard feelings here. Apology accepted.”
I was actually relieved that he had accepted my apology and it made me shake his hand quickly.
Then, without letting go, we got off the ground at the same time.
“We should head back to the house,” he said. “We have to go to the hospital an hour from now.”

I was still in bed while staring at the ceiling, wondering how the run was going. I could already picture Maddox out there, shirtless and competitive with his ego fully charged.
When I imagined him losing, his possible reaction made me want to actually see it. I was only curious. I was still thinking about how that would crush his ego when there was a knock on my door.
I sat up and went over to open it, only to pause when I saw Trina standing there. She smiled, but there was something different about it. I was used to seeing her fake smiles, but this time, she just looked like she was worried about something.
“Hey, is everything okay?” I asked immediately.
She let out a shaky breath. “I really need to talk to you. It can’t wait.”
The way she made it sound so urgent made me instantly step aside so she could come in.
I closed the door afterwards, walked over to the bed and sat down.
Patting the spot beside me, I said, “Why don’t you have a seat?”
She shook her head immediately as she began to pace, like whatever she had to say was too heavy for her to
sit down.
