Thirty minutes had gone by since Trina had come to my room and I was still thinking about it when I received a call from Aunt Patricia.
She already sounded so vibrant that early morning. It had been the case ever since she had started her new job, thanks to Maddox.
“I’m so glad that he accompanied you to Sydney,” she said. “He’s turned out to be such a gentle gentleman and until now I have to admit that I’m still pleasantly surprised by him.”
I nodded in agreement like she could see me.
I was giving her the update about going to the hospital when I heard voices echo outside.
Curious, I walked over to the window and looked outside just in time to see Maddox and Dean running towards the front doors. They looked like they were out of breath, clearly pushing themselves.
Maddox being shirtless was quite the sight to look at, but there was something else that caught my attention. It didn’t seem like there was any tension between them anymore. All I could see was understanding and competition.
My lips curved into a smile with relief that they had finally talked.
I stepped back from the window while still chatting with my aunt. I knew that I had a few more minutes before Maddox would come upstairs to the bedroom.
A few minutes later, as I had estimated, the bedroom door finally opened.
I turned around just in time to see him walk in, his chest rising and falling heavily as sweat dripped down from his head. His hair was so soaked that the strands were plastered to his forehead.
Apart from that, the early morning sun was right in position to hit his chest, perfectly outlining every muscle for me to see.
He locked the door behind him without a word, then started walking towards me. I was still on the phone, but when he got close enough, I reached out without thinking and trailed my hand along his chest, running it down towards his abs.
He licked his lips as his eyes switched between my face and my hand movements, like he was daring me to go even lower.
Then, he suddenly grabbed my wrist and whispered. I could already imagine him sounding a bit rough had he said it out loud.
“I need a shower.”
He immediately started pulling me towards the bathroom and I didn’t even bother to pretend to stay on the call. I quickly said goodbye to my aunt before she could suspect anything.
I tossed my phone on the bed and walked behind him into the bathroom.
When we were inside, I slowed down a bit and stood right in front of him.
“Well?” I said with raised eyebrows.
His lips curved into a smile as he said, “I beat him.”
I rolled my eyes, already knowing that, but secretly enjoying how proud he looked when saying it.

“And,” he added smoothly, like he knew what I really wanted to hear. “I apologized to him. We’re good now.”

I stood on my tippy toes, moving his sweat drenched hair away from his face with a smile. “Aww, look at you admitting that you were wrong.”
After shooting me a playful glare, he suddenly lifted me effortlessly and carried me with him into the shower cubicle.
I giggled, wrapping my arms around his neck as he slid the door shut.
Maddox and I came downstairs while holding hands and I found myself inhaling sharply a few times at the smell of breakfast that was still being served.
Just as we got to the bottom of the stairs, Dean emerged from another room. I didn’t want to pass up that chance. It had to be right at that moment.
“Hey, can we talk?” I said to him.
“Sure, what’s up?” Dean asked while approaching us.
Before I could respond, Maddox looked between us and said, “I’ll give you two a minute.” He pulled out his phone. “I’ve got a few calls to make and they can’t wait.”
As he made his way to the foyer so he could head outside, I noticed how he seemed a little tense, like something was already bothering him.
My gaze still lingered on him as Dean walked past me and said, “He’s coming back, you know.” He teased me.
I snapped out of it, turning around to follow behind him into the living room.
“I know,” I said quickly. “I was… never mind.”
He sat right by the couch that was near the window while I sat on the other one not too far away from him. It also had a perfect view outside and I could already see Maddox, placing his phone against his ear.
Looking away so I could focus on Dean, I said, “Why didn’t you tell me about Trina and Maddox?”
He exhaled, leaning back in his seat. “Because it wasn’t my place to tell you about his past. During the run, he and I talked about it. He told me that he already told you. Looks like the guy really doesn’t want to hide anything from you.”
I nodded slowly as I continued to listen, but my attention shifted when I glanced outside the window. Maddox was still there on the phone, quickly pacing back–and–forth. He even pulled on his neck tie like it was choking him, so he loosened it before running a hand through his hair. Whatever that call was about had him on edge.
No matter what, there was no way for me to know what was going on. All I could do was wait. I planned to ask him later when the time was right.
Looking away and focusing on Dean again, I considered telling him about Trina coming to my bedroom and the way she tried to deliver the truth like a weapon and waited for me to break down. But I decided not to say anything. He didn’t need to know because I could handle her just fine.
After the chat with Dean, we all gathered at the breakfast table, sitting in the same arrangement as the previous night.
Maddox was quieter now and I still believed it was something to do with that phone call. He hadn’t said a word about it yet and I thought that maybe it was because of everyone else around
From across the table, Trina tried to smile and act normal, but it didn’t reach her eyes. There was still disappointment there as she never got what she wanted.

Chapter 178
We had breakfast in silence for a while until she was the one to finally say something.
“So, are you guys still heading to the hospital right after this?”
Dean nodded. “Yeah, but we won’t be gone too long.”

“That’s fine. Take all the time you need. There shouldn’t be any toistakes with this.” She tilted her head, forcing a smile. “I don’t mind staying home. It’s not like I’ll be alone. I’ll have Maddox to keep me company.”
My eyes narrowed slightly. She was still trying that shit.
Before I could say it myself, Maddox spoke up, his tone almost sharp.
“Well, you’re going to be home alone because I’m going with them.”
The fake smile faded, but even when she plastered it back on real quick, I had already caught it.
“Oh, that’s great,” she said, quickly looking down at her plate.
I was so satisfied seeing her disappointment once again that I glanced over at Maddox. Something might h with him, but as soon as I looked at him, he winked at me like he had everything under control.

The rides to the hospital felt different this time. I sat right next to Maddox just as I did the previous night while Dean sat on the other side. But the energy was different. There was no awkward silence like the previous day. They spoke about investments overseas, expansions and numbers that sounded important. While I felt a little out of place, I didn’t mind. If anything, it made me smile.
Dean eventually brought me into the conversation when he said. “Hey, Harper, right after the test, I’ll have to travel. Business waits for no one.”
I nodded. “I understand. I hear that all the time from him.” I gestured towards Maddox.
