Chapter 182

“That one too,” Maddox replied.
:
“Mr Aldridge,” she called out his name softly. “I was wondering if you would like to-”
“Just a second,” he said to her. “Babe, I’ll be coming over at 1 PM.”

She called out his name again and he grunted with irritation before ending the call. I didn’t even get to tell him the rest.
I stared at the phone for a few seconds, thinking about Claire being right there.
I told myself just to wait for him because he was coming over to my place. I even thought I’d make lunch for us since I hadn’t done that in a while.
It was the only reason that I was able to focus on the groceries again.
I even called my friends to let them know about meeting my father the following day.
Apart from looking forward to it because I finally got to see my father face–to–face, I also looked forward to it because I knew it was the truth. He was going to be there. This wasn’t a game for anybody. I thought back to the last time when I was so excited to meet my sister in London, only to find out that Tiffany and Kate had played tricks on me. I was going to forever be grateful to Kate that she had given me that memory card. I checked it every day, watching the same pictures and videos just to remind myself that my sister had always been there.
And now, my family was about to get even bigger.
It was 2 PM and there was still no word from Maddox. Whatever had happened, I thought he would communicate, but he didn’t.
The meal I’d made went cold and I could barely eat as I couldn’t stop thinking about what was going on. Still, I decided to wait for a few more minutes so I’d give him a chance to show up, but those minutes turned into hours until it was 6 PM. It was at that moment that I couldn’t take it anymore, so I dialed his number but it didn’t even ring. I still tried a few more times but it was the same thing.
I had so much running through my mind that I tossed the phone on the bed a bit too roughly. There was no way Grayson was right.
I told myself there had to be a clear explanation and I just needed to wait. It was best to believe that Maddox would call me at any second.
Each time I took a break from my laptop, I came to the window to check my driveway several times. Maybe he’d been parked outside and I just didn’t hear him.
All the little hope I had been holding onto completely died when the day came to an end without him

showing up or even sending me a text to tell me why he wasn’t able to make it.
When it was time for bed, I covered myself and curled up, trying so hard to keep my composure. There were so many emotions running through me because I was so disappointed.
It took me a few hours to even close my eyes because I couldn’t help but wonder where he was and who he was with. Why couldn’t I reach him? Why didn’t he reply to my texts?
I kept checking my phone until 2 AM, thinking that I might have missed a message or something, but there was nothing. That night, I went to bed with a heavy heart, which was why I couldn’t even sleep for too long.
I was awake by 6 AM the following morning.
I came to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face. I was in the middle of rinsing my mouth when I heard a familiar engine outside. I cleaned my mouth quickly, storming out of my bedroom with loud footsteps. He had some explaining to do.
When I stepped onto the front porch, he had already stepped out of his car. He was in a suit and I couldn’t tell if it was from the previous day or from that morning.
I didn’t even bother approaching him this time. I just stood by the porch with my arms crossed. He took a deep breath before he even began to approach.
“I know how this looks, but I can explain,” he said.
I had so much to say, but I held back so I could listen.
“Fine,” I said.
“There was an emergency-“
“What emergency?” I cut him off.
“A friend fell sick and I had to stay over.”
My eyes narrowed with disbelief. “Fine, let’s say you had to stay over for real. Why didn’t you call me? Even a simple text would’ve been enough. Do you know how ridiculous you sound? Where were you?”
He sighed. “I just told you where I was, so why would you ask me that? Where else do you think I was?”
I shrugged, my glare sharp. “I don’t know. You told me that Claire’s in town and you were working with her yesterday-”
“This is unbelievable,” he interrupted me.
“No, you’re not about to do that.” I firmly shook my head. “You were still with her the last time we spoke. And then I didn’t hear from you at all. What else am I supposed to think?”
I wanted to bring up Juliet as well and the fact that she was in town, but I chose not to. I wanted to see if he would tell me. Did he even know?

“Look…” he trailed off, his voice gentle, “I just told you what happened.”
“Fine, then prove it.”
