Chapter 181
Harper
I began to picture everything Grayson had told me and it hurt, like it was actually happening. I couldn’t imagine what I would feel like if it were to actually happen.
The last thing I was going to do at that moment was show him that what was running through my head actually began to affect me, so I kept my head high, my expression hardening.
“What are you trying to do?” I asked, smirking like I had everything under control.
He raised his hands in defeat. “I was only giving you some advice. Sure, everything’s rosie right now and to put you at ease, he even made that post. But so what? He’s still meeting Claire and pretty soon Juliet is going to join them. You’ve seen both of those girls. They’re so sexy that no man would resist them. Think about how someone who’s had both of them before would feel. Anyway, I saw you when I walked in and thought I should just see if you’re doing all right.”
I didn’t know what I expected to happen, but it wasn’t what followed. Without saying anything else, he walked past me and never looked back. He didn’t stick around the way he usually did or bring up his feelings for me. He just left like he was over it.
My gaze followed him as he walked away and the entire time, not once did he look back.
When he turned at the corner, I looked away, asking myself how I felt about that. Then, I shrugged it off so I could get back to grocery shopping.
I finally had everything I’d come for and headed to the checkout. It had been a few minutes since he had left, but what he had said to me lingered in my mind.
After packing everything in my car and beginning the ride home, I glanced at my phone when it began to ring, Dean’s name flashing on the screen. I chose to wait until I’d be home. I already had a lot going through my mind anyway.
When I parked in my driveway, I didn’t even step out of my car right away and decided to call him back.
“I was actually about to put my phone away,” he said from the other end of the line.
“I’m surprised you’ve called me twice today, considering how busy you are,” I said.
He chuckled. “Had this not been important, I would’ve called you later on.”
“What’s up?” I asked, stepping out of the car and approaching the trunk.
“Dad wants to see you.”
I paused before I could open the trunk and held my breath, my eyes growing wide. “He does?”
“Yeah, he’ll be in San Francisco tomorrow.”

Chapter 181
“Oh, is he coming for work here or-”
“Harper, he’s only coming there for you.”
I was so thrilled that it took me a while to speak.
“Are you there?” he asked.

“Uh…y–yeah. I’m just processing it. He really said he wants to see me?” My eyebrows furrowed. “You’re not the one who made the suggestion?”
“Nope. I know how much you don’t want to accept anything unless he acknowledges you himself. I mean it when I say I had no role to play in this. He’ll call you when he’s ready. He asked for your number.”
“Really?”
“Yup, I didn’t just give it to him and tell him to call you, just in case that’s what you’re thinking.”
I didn’t deny the fact that something like that had crossed my mind.
“This is so unexpected.” I took a deep breath as I placed a hand on my forehead.
“Just relax, okay? I know you’re nervous about meeting him, but I’ll tell you all about him and what you should expect.”
“Oh, I’m not trying to be perfect or anything,” I clarified.
“I know, but don’t you want to know what he’s like?”
I nodded like he could see me.
After my call with him, I immediately opened the trunk and called Aunt Patricia. From the tone of her voice, she wasn’t as enthusiastic as I was.
“It took him long enough to do that. If he makes you cry in any way, he’ll have me to answer to. I don’t care how much he’s worth.”
“Aunt, I don’t think something like that is going to happen.” I pressed the phone against my ear, using my other hand to carry the bags towards the front door. “He just wants to meet me.”
“Will Maddox come with you to meet him?”
“I don’t think so. I’m meeting my dad for the first time. I prefer just being the two of us.”
“Remember what I said, Landon better not make you feel like you’re not his first born child.”
I chuckled. It was an obvious warning, but she sounded so sweet while saying it.
By the time the call came to an end with her, she was her usual sweet self.
I had so much to unpack when I got to the kitchen, but it could wait because I had so many people to tell
