I was alone in my suite for the night, hunched over on the velvet couch with a glass of whiskey in my hand that hadn’t left my fingers for the past hour. Or maybe it had been two. I had already lost count of how many drinks I had poured. I needed that and felt that I was still going to need some more.

I dragged a hand over my face with a sharp exhale as I had never felt so defeated.

I didn’t know what else I was supposed to do to get between Harper and Maddox. I had set it up perfectly and it should’ve worked. It almost did. I saw the tension earlier, but somehow, they fixed it.

I was just so glad I’d managed to get away before they were able to notice that I was right there. If they had turned and saw me standing near that doorI clenched my jaw while shaking my head. I didn’t need that image running through my mind.

As a distraction, I picked up my phone and started scrolling. Notification after notification lit up my screen, everything just about one thing, congratulatory messages from family, friends and industry contacts.

I didn’t bother replying to any of them because I’d come across some headlines that were impossible to ignore. I opened them all and the photos were polished with dramatic captions.

MADDOX ALDRIDGE STEALS THE SPOTLIGHT!

MADDOX DOMINATES THE NIGHT!

MADDOX ALDRIDGE, THE REAL WINNER!

I scoffed and threw my phone onto the couch beside me. It wasn’t the fashion articles or the red carpet breakdowns that bothered me. It was that narrative, where they painted him as the star of the night. He was the one who walked away with everything. And the worst part for me was that he was the winner in more ways than one.

The image of him and Harper passionately kissing outside flashed in my mind as I looked down at the trophy sitting on the table across from me.

The more that I looked at it, the more it actually pissed me off. There was no way he just happened to sweep everything. I refuse to believe that the awards just conveniently worked in his favor. He must have done something.

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees as I stared at the trophy, like it had personally betrayed me.

It wasn’t supposed to go like that. I was supposed to win at the awards, with Harper and against him.

There had to be something else I could do. Maybe I had to be harsher and more direct as being subtle clearly didn’t work.

I was in the middle of thinking about where to start when the sound of the door clicking open snapped me back to reality.

I looked over and Tiffany walked in without even glancing at me. She headed straight to the closet, like I was part of the furniture.

I watched her in silence as she unzipped her dress and dropped it to the floor. She didn’t even rush, like she didn’t care whether I saw her naked or not.

Even at that point, she still didn’t acknowledge me.

Instead, she pulled something out of the closet. It was a simple, short black dress.

She put it on along with some different shoes, then walked past me to head for the door.

Where are you going?I asked.

She stopped in her tracks, but didn’t turn around immediately.

That’s none of your business, she said bluntly.

My grip tightened around the glass. It’s almost midnight,I said. Where could you possibly be going dressed like that?

She let out a soft chuckle. She wasn’t even amused. It was clear mockery.

Do you really want to know?she asked.

Something in her tone instantly irritated me.

She walked back towards me slowly, stopping just a few feet away. She then leaned over slightly, staring straight into my eyes like she was unbothered.

I’m going to see Josh.”

I hated hearing that name. It wasn’t because I wanted her, I didn’t. It was just because that was another reminder that once again, I was on my own.

Looking away, I said, Have fun.

I will.

Her phone rang before she even reached the door and the way she giggled made me look at her again. I noticed the way her face lit up when she looked at the screen and she answered immediately.

I’m on my way,she said, her voice suddenly warm and excited.

She didn’t even look back when she was about to close the door behind her.

And just like that, I was alone again.

I leaned back slowly and rested my head on the couch. That was going to be one shitty night with everything that was still running through my mind. At that moment, I had accepted that I was the loser.

It was almost 1 AM and I was now sitting alone on the balcony, my elbows resting on the railing with another glass of whiskey in my hand which I hadn’t yet touched.

It was way past midnight and that meant it was Harper’s birthday. I glanced behind me through open balcony doors, just barely able to see the gift bag sitting there under the lamp light. It was something she had always wanted. I told myself that despite everything being messy, that gift could still be my way back in. It was going to be my reset and proof that I knew her in ways Maddox never could.

As I imagined all the possible ways she’d be excited upon seeing it, I heard her soft giggle which came from the suite next to

mine.

I instantly looked over at the dividing wall between the balconies and just a second later, I heard the faint slide of a door opening.

She stepped onto the balcony and I didn’t need to see her to know that it was her.

Then, I heard Maddox’s voice. He said something I couldn’t quite make out, but it made her laugh again and I hated that.
