Chapter 192

When I felt the brightness of the morning sun on my face, I couldn’t feel myself going back to sleep after that. I groaned softly before turning my head into the pillow.
I could already feel my head throbbing and it wasn’t unbearable, just enough to remind me that I drank more than I should have the previous night.
Before I even opened my eyes, the memories quickly came back to me. So much had happened, especially when I was with Maddox by the balcony. He made sure to be rough with me so I wouldn’t keep it down. He wanted Grayson to hear me and I had no regrets.
I thought I’d see him next to me when I opened my eyes, but I immediately realized that I was alone on the bed with the sheets tangled around me. He must have been in the bathroom or the kitchen.
I stretched lightly, then reached for my phone on the bedside table. The first thing I saw was the time. It was already 11 AM and I shook my head and how I had slept that long.
Then, right below the time, I noticed the notifications. There were so many of them and they were a mix of texts, missed calls and social media alerts.
Before I even opened any of them, I was already smiling because I already had an idea what most of them were about.
The first text at the top made me place a hand on my chest in appreciation before even reading the whole message. My father had sent it just a minute after midnight.
“Happy birthday. I’m so proud of the young woman you’ve become even when I wasn’t around. Moving forward, I’ll do everything I can to be the father you always deserved. I have something for you and it’s right there in San Francisco. You can pick it up whenever you’re ready. Just let me know.”
I glanced at the ceiling with excitement and curiosity as I wondered what he had for me. But what mattered to me more than that was the fact that he was the first to wish me. It was also the first time in my entire life I was experiencing that and I looked forward to more birthdays in the future because I knew he’d be there.
I quickly typed back, thanking him for the wishes.
I then scrolled and just seeing the way the names were lined up got me excited. There was Dean, my aunt and my friends.
There were paragraphs of sweet messages from him and my aunt and voice notes from Ella and Zoey singing off–key birthday songs.
I burst into laughter as I listened to them a few times.
Among all those names, I didn’t see Maddox, but I wasn’t even disappointed that he didn’t text. He was right there and probably wanted to say it in person.
Not long after he came to my mind, the bathroom door creaked open.
I quickly sat up more, pulling the sheet up to cover my chest. But I soon reminded myself that he had seen me so many times without anything.
He walked out of the bathroom wearing a black robe, his hair damp and pushed back from his forehead. He looked so gorgeous as usual.

For a second, I expected a grin and a “happy birthday“, or even something dramatic and sweet.
Instead, he casually walked over to the bed, leaned down and quickly kissed my forehead.
“You’re awake.”
I blinked rapidly. Was that it?
I forced a small smile. “Yeah, my head hurts a little.”
“You’ll be fine,” he said, already moving away.
He walked towards the mirror, reached for his phone and began scrolling.
I was so disappointed that my smile faded slightly.
“Hungry?” He glanced at me.
“I am.”
He nodded. “Good.”

He didn’t even look at my face long enough to notice the change in it. He didn’t seem to sense that something felt off.
“What do you want for breakfast?” he asked, already picking up the hotel phone.
“Well, I don’t know. Anything is fine.”
He didn’t even push or tease me for being indecisive about what I wanted for breakfast. He just made the order without much thought and ended the call.
I continued sitting in that bed, watching him move around the room like that day was just another day, like it wasn’t my birthday.
I told myself to relax and that maybe he was planning something, which was why he was waiting for the right moment.
But those possibilities were soon dismissed when he approached the walk–in closet and came back out, dressed in a sharp
suit.
Seeing him like that made me immediately get out of bed, keeping the sheet wrapped around me.
“Are you going out?” I asked as I watched him. I didn’t even try to hide the disappointment in my voice.
I thought we’d spend the day together, just us.
He briefly looked up from the cufflinks he was adjusting. “Yeah, I have to go. Something urgent came up. It can’t wait.”
“Oh.” The word came out of me like a whisper. “What time will you be back?”
Putting on his watch, he said, “I’m not sure, but you can stay here as long as you want.”
“Cool.” I nodded once, not even bothering to say anything more.
I walked into the bathroom before he could see how much that answer actually hurt me.
I closed the door behind me and leaned against it for a few seconds.

Everyone who mattered in my life at that moment had wished me a happy birthday, except him that bothered me more and more as time went on.
When I stepped under the shower and the water washed over me, it still wasn’t enough to wash away the building pain in my chest. Maybe I was overthinking it, but if that day mattered to him, wouldn’t he have said it already?
We both sat across from each other at the breakfast table near the window.
Breakfast had arrived five minutes ago, but Maddox barely looked at the food or at me. He had his phone in his hand and constantly scrolled and typed. He was so focused that he looked like he was in the middle of some high–stakes negotiation instead of sitting across from his girlfriend on her birthday.
I just wanted him to say something, so I picked up my fork and pushed a strawberry around my plate. “Everyone’s talking about last night,” I said, trying to sound enthusiastic. “Your several trophies are all over the internet.”
He hummed. “Yeah.”
His eyes didn’t even leave the screen.
“They’re calling you the real winner of the night,” I said.
He hummed again. “That’s good.”
I waited for more, something like a joke or something arrogant as that was usually expected when it came to him, but there was nothing, so I thought I’d try again.
“You must feel pretty good about it.”
“Mhm.”
I gave up at that moment as he didn’t seem interested at all.
Putting his phone down, he took a few quick bites of his food, then checked the time on his watch.
‘I have to go. I’ll just get my wallet.” He stood up abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor.
I wasn’t even able to comment so I just watched him. Everything about him was so rushed, like the way he moved as he buttoned his jacket.
When he had everything he needed, he came back to the table, leaned down and kissed my forehead. “I’ll call you later.”
That was it. There was no happy birthday or an assurance that we would celebrate that night.
Then, he turned and headed towards the door without looking back.
It only took a few seconds for that door to shut and then I was alone.
I just sat still for a moment, staring at the closed door.
Then, I slowly got up and walked back towards the bed, sitting down on the edge of it.
