I was standing in front of my bedroom mirror, my fingers working on the buttons of my shirt harder than necessary. It was already 4 PM and Tiffany wasn’t yet home.

I glanced down at my phone on the dresser, thinking about how I’d called her three times but she chose not to return my calls.

Just as I shoved another button through its hole, I heard the sound of an engine outside. That should’ve helped calm me down. Instead, it made something bitter rise in my chest. She chose to come home at that moment, not when I’d called.

After I was done with the shirt, I grabbed my shoes and sat on the edge of the bed, forcing them on with sharp, impatient

movements.

She came into the room while humming, keys dangling from her fingers with a smile of satisfaction.

You’re late,I said. I’ve been waiting for a long time. You know that it’s a thirty minute drive.”

She shrugged and walked past me towards the closet.

I didn’t tell you to wait, she said casually, picking out a dress. That’s your problem.”

My hands clenched at my sides. You know that my parents are expecting us.”

And we’ll go,she replied, completely unbothered as she changed into something else.

You’re getting too comfortable. You do realize what happens if anyone finds out that the baby you’re carrying isn’t even mine.

She didn’t freeze or even hesitate. She just chuckled. So far, everything’s under control. There’s no need to worry.

Like I said, you’re getting too comfortable with Josh. What if-

Oh, please, she scoffed. Like you’re not out there chasing Harper.

I stopped blinking, unable to defend myself.

She laughed softly, shaking her head. I know everything. You really need to stop acting like you’re perfect, because you’re

not.

She moved on to put on her heels and continued, almost amused.

You went to desperate lengths just to get between Harper and Maddox and what did it get you?Her lips curved into a cruel smile. Nothing! You’re a loser in more ways than one.

I told myself to argue, but I couldn’t because that was the truth.

Just to cut the conversation short, I said, I’ll be waiting outside in the car.

When we arrived at my parentsresidence, I stepped out of the car first and walked over to Tiffany’s side. I opened the car door for her, something I never did when no one was watching.

But that moment was different as appearances did matter.

She stepped out gracefully, smoothing her dress with a fake smile. Anyone watching would’ve thought she was glowing with happiness because I was being such a gentleman.

We approached the entrance together where the staff were waiting and I instinctively reached for her hand, but she gently pulled away and hooked her arm around mine instead. I let it happen anyway because I didn’t want to argue.

After a warm welcome from the staff, we stepped inside where my parents were waiting in the foyer.

My mother beamed the moment she saw us.

There you are!she said, pulling me into a hug first while Tiffany hugged her fatherinlaw.

I hugged my mother back automatically, then my father.

Tiffany stepped forward next and my mother embraced her with so much more love than she did with me, but I could see Tiffany’s stiffness in the shoulders during that embrace. She didn’t want to be there, but she played her role beautifully.

Afterwards, we moved to the living room, settling down on the sofas.

The meal is being served now,my mother said cheerfully. Then, she turned to Tiffany, her eyes lighting up. You look absolutely radiant. You’re glowing.

Tiffany smiled wider. You think so?

Of course! My son must be taking very good care of you.

He does,Tiffany replied smoothly. He takes very good care of me.

Our eyes met for a second because we both knew the truth. The one taking care of her needs lately wasn’t me, it was Josh.

My father cleared his throat to join the conversation. Congratulations again on the trophy.

There was pride in his tone that I couldn’t quite match.

Thank you,I said, making sure that my words didn’t sound empty.

In the back of my mind, I was still thinking about everything Maddox walked away with. I was second in every way possible.

Well,” Tiffany said, shifting the attention towards her. It was also such an incredible night for my brother. Everyone just keeps talking about it. I mean, when has it ever happened that one person gets to walk away with that many trophies in one night? I still see it as a good thing for the other nominees because that’s some healthy competition right there. It helps build character.

Even though she said it like that, I knew she was enjoying that a little too much. That comparison was intentional. She was trying to hurt my feelings and I wasn’t about to just let her get away with it. So I leaned back in my seat, my voice calm when I spoke.

It’s too bad my motherinlaw wasn’t in attendance to witness such a historic evening. She must not be ready to face the public, though she did just fine when we met her in that restaurant.”

Tiffany shot me a dangerous glare but tried to hide it quickly behind that smile.
