When the time was 6 PM, I convinced myself not to care. It was just another day because it didn’t mean anything to Maddox. The last time I had texted him, he told me he would come earlier, but that was two hours ago.
I was standing in front of the mirror, taking my time to smooth down my dress as I thought about how that was the worst birthday I’d ever had. I couldn’t even hide the sadness in my face.
Just as I finished with my hair, the door opened and closed from the other room. He was finally back, but that didn’t get me excited in any way.
When he walked into the bedroom, I looked back at him and my heart sank. For him, it was like it was any normal evening. He didn’t even have flowers with him.
“You took so long,” I said as I looked back at the mirror.
He approached me and stopped right next to me as he loosened his neck tie. “I had more work to do. It couldn’t wait, but hey, I’m here now.”
My jaw clenched at that statement. Was that all he had to say?
He moved closer, wanting to reach for my waist. “What were you up to while I was away?”
I stepped aside before he could fully pull me in. “Swimming,” I said flatly, moving around the room instead of looking at him. “I was with Ella and Zoey.”
“Oh?” There was amusement in his voice. “Sounds like it was fun. What else?”
“Nothing much happened after that. They both had things to do with their boyfriends.”
“Boyfriends?” he repeated.
“Yeah.” I crossed my arms with a heavy sigh. “Ella and Adrian are now official.”
“Good for them. Get your stuff. We’re leaving.”
I nodded once, trying not to feel childish for expecting more.
We left the hotel suite and as soon as we stepped into the hallway, he was on his phone, typing and scrolling.
I tried to ignore it for a while, but by the time we got to the elevator, I just had to ask.
“Are you still busy?”
“Mhm,” he said without looking up at me, “But I’ll be done soon.”
The limousine from the previous evening was waiting outside and even as he opened the door for me, he was still scrolling on his phone.
We left the hotel while he was on a phone call and it went on for so long that was getting more and more irritated.
How could he ruin my day like that?
I was still complaining about it in my heart when I noticed that we had turned off the usual road and were now on a different

Curious. I looked over at him and spoke quietly since he was still on his phone call.
“Where are we going?”
He muted the call for a moment, then smiled at me. “You’ll see.”
I was now filled with some hope as I realized that he was just playing tricks with me to build up to that moment.
Ten minutes later, the limousine arrived at a luxury car dealership and I was already excited even though I didn’t know what to expect.
He opened the door for me and I just couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.
“What are we doing here?” I asked.
“Nothing,” he shrugged.
I chuckled because that really sounded funny, but he glanced at me with a serious expression.
“I mean it,” he said.
I still didn’t believe him, which was why my excitement only intensified as the seconds went by.
I looked around at all the fancy cars and could see myself driving most of them, but the price tags were extremely high.
While I was still checking out a purple Porsche, which I liked the most out of everything I had seen at that dealership, a man called out to Maddox with so much respect.
“Mr Aldridge, welcome.”
I looked back and spotted a man dressed in a suit as he hurried towards Maddox.
“Thank you.” Maddox said, then turned slightly toward me. “This is my girlfriend, Harper.”
The way he called me his girlfriend did something to me. I didn’t even have to dwell on how he had been playing with iny feelings all day when I had already figured out that he was done with his games. He had only been building suspense.
The manager smiled at me instantly. “It’s a pleasure to meet you” He then looked back at Maddox “How can we help you unay
That was the moment I’d been waiting for Maddox was going to tell me to choose whichever car I liked. I could already feel the dock the joy and the disbelief.
Instead, he said, “I’m here to buy some spare parts for my favorite car
I held my breath with duappointment, the air immediately leaving my lungs
The manager nodded entusiast ally ‘Of course Right this way
And just like that, my fantasy was crushed
He held my hand as we followed the manager deeper into the dealership i wanted to pull away, but I didn’t.
Glancing back at me, he said. “Are you okay?”

It was ridiculous to feel disappointed because he never said anything about the gift. He never promised me anything. I’m the one who assumed that it was going to happen.
I had already been so disappointed that day that I wondered if it could get any worse.
We were back on the road and at that point, I didn’t feel like talking anymore.
I mostly stared out the window while he was on his phone again, talking to someone about work.
I was so over it that I just wanted to go home.
Just as I thought we would turn left at the intersection, we continued straight ahead until we turned into another unfamiliar road on the right.
He was still on the phone, but I asked him anyway where the chauffeur was taking us.
He muted the call for a few seconds and said, “I just need to leave the spare parts at the other house where I left my car.”
